he did not want to give details at
this point.
Don Stewart has worked for the
company for 14 years while John
Battye has worked for 12 years.
Both grew up in Blyth.
Robbie Lawrie took over the
business from his father in January
1966. James (known to most as
Jimmy) Lawrie had started the
business in 1947 as a way of
starting his own business without a
large investment in money. Re-

cently arrived from Scotland
was encouraged to get into decor
ating (mostly papering at the time)
by Mrs. Earl Hoble who had been
doing some papering in and around
the village. His initial equipment
included two stepladders and an
old plank he found in a barn. Later
he began doing outside painting as
well.
After Robbie took over the
business Jimmy became custodian
of Blyth Public School for many
years before retiring. He is famous
throughout the area for entertain
ing with Scottish songs and jokes.
The business expanded under
Robbie Lawrie as he opened a shop
in the family home selling decorat
ing supplies and reached farther
afield and took on large decorating
projects.
He served on Blyth village
council and was reeve from 1973 to
1976.
The new partners will continue
to operate the business as Lawrie
Decorating.
