Town and Country Homemakers (cont) •To work directly and co-operatively with the individual, family members, the health care team, and other community services, with the goal of achieving the maximum independence appropriate to the situation. •To assist with and provide such personal care as is required by the individual or family to carry out the normal functions of daily life; particularly eating, washing, dressing, and appropriate activities which will enhance a feeling of well-being. •To assist the individual to maintain the maximum contact that she is capable of within the community. •Tobe alerted to rhe existence of other community resources that would be of service to the individual or to the family. A Town and Country Homemaker is trained to provide direct services to a client, such as light housekeeping, child care, personal care, and the planning and preparation of meals. As well, she will act as a role model for the client, as well as providing psychological support and therapeutic action and intervention where necessary. A Home Support Worker may provide such services as are needed in heavy housecleaning and maintenance, or by providing a handyman service, for minor home repairs and yard and garden maintenance. The program also makes use of volunteer workers, who supply such services as transportation and escort services "or people who need assistance because of a physical or nental handicap, when no family member is available to provide such assistance. Other volunteers serve as friendly visitors to provide companionship to the handicapped, chronically ill or elderly persons living alone, or may offer telephone re-assurance to those in need. The latter can often be developed into a peer support service, where a group of elderly people may check on each other rfcgularly through a telephone network, with the ability to call for help if such is needed. Town and Country Homemakers may be contacted five days a week during regular office hours at 357-3222. Staff will be happy to explain the program at any time, and will offer referrals to other agencies if necessary. C 'I BARRISTER, SOLICITORS & NOTARIES TURNBERRY ST. 216 JOSEPHINE ST.
