Eventually a committee was formed which applied for a Canada Works grant to implement the service, which was later named “Town and Country Homemakers.” Town and Country Homemakers officially began operation on January 2, 1978, with 45 homemakers; it now employs over 200 homemakers and home support workers. Country Homemakers has always been that homemaker service should be available to anyone in Huron County on the basis of need, rather than on the basis of an ability to pay. As a result, service is available to private clients on a sliding fee scale based on yearly income, and is partly supported by an annual fund-raising campaign, as well as by donations from the county, municipalities, service clubs, churches, businesses, foundations and private individuals. If a client applying for Homemaker services is eligible for care under the Huron County Home Care Program, a program fully funded by the Ontario Hospital Insurance Plan, a referral will always be made in order that the needed services will be provided free of charge to the client. Town and Country Homemakers provides services which enhance the ability of people to live independently in their jwn homes. The concept is so simple and so full of common sense that it is tempting to overlook its importance, but the strength of the homemaker/home support services is bound up in the very notion most people have of “home”: having a ‘ ‘ home of one ’ s own ” is a very basic desire to most people in our society, while to be “homeless” is to be rootless and insecure. The aim of providing homemaker/home support services is to enable clients to maintain the maximum amount of independence available to them, no matter what the circumstances, and therefore to retain a sense of dignity, a sense of challenge, and the knowledge that help is available to them so that they may maintain this vital independence. The objectives of Town and Country Homemakers are: •To assist the individual to establish and maintain a more liveable home environment. Will take the mystery out of DAVID LONGSTAFF 1.
