Family Support
THE HURON CENTRE FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH,
482-3931
The Huron Centre for Children and Youth is a non-profit
organization funded by the Ontario government. It provides
confidential, free counselling to families with children up to
19 years of age, and to children themselves.
In 1977, the main office was set up in Clinton, and
employees will assist family members who may have
difficulty in dealing with the sickness or death of a family
member, the problems of raising children or even
arguments that can lead to family breakdown.
The Centre for Children and Youth meets weekly with
some or all family members to discuss what changes would
be helpful to that particular family and how the family can
make things better.
FAMILY & CHILDREN'S SERVICES OF HURON
COUNTY, 524-7356
The programs offered by Family and Children’s Services
of Huron County are mandated by legislation in order to
protect children and give counselling to families.
Family and Children’s Services handle adoptions and
foster homes, and supervise the homes.
Now in its 75th year, the agency offers Christmas
programs and summer camps, which are funded by
donations.
In total, Family and Children’s Services assist
approximately 200 families a month in Huron County.
RESIDENCES FOR CHILDREN
Two unique residences exist in Huron County as
treatment group homes for children. Both are operated by
Betty Bedard-Bidwell, a registered play and art therapist,
and supervised by the Ministry of Community and Social
Services (COMSOC). As well, Ms. Bedard-Bidwell treats
clients on a private basis, or by referral from doctors,
lawyers, social services workers, etc., at her home near
Goderich, The Homestead.
The Homestead at RR 2, Goderich, is a treatment group
home for young boys and girls in need of protection from
physical or sexual abuse. The home offers specialized
service and treatment for emotionally disturbed youth.
The Saratoga Residence at RR 3, Auburn, is a specialized
treatment group home for adolescent boys, which offers a
program which promotes independent living and the
development of confidence and competence in social skills.
Mrs. Bedard-Bidwell may be reached at 524-2852.
