The chaplain will be consulted about such issues as AIDS educa tion, child abuse, religious educa tion and family life. Rev.J.J. Carriagn of Dublin, chaplain ot'the Huron-Perth board from 1982 to 1985 was the first chaplain to advise the board. The board hasn't had trouble making decisions without a chap lain. which isn't to say it wouldn’t make better decisions with a chaplain said director Bill Eckert. Father Carrigan only attended general meetings and said he was not as know ledgeable as he should be and therefore his role wasn’t as functional or important as it could be. said Mr. Eckert. Over the past two years, the board has been studying how to make the chaplain’s role more meaningful and comprehensive. In a role description approved by the board, the chaplain will be welcome at closed committee of the whole meetings and the board committee meetings. The chaplain ’ s purpose will be to present the views of the Bishop John Serlockof the London diocese and of the Huron-Perth deanery which represents the priests of both counties. The chaplain will be a non-voting advisor whose appointment will coincide with the election of trustees. He will also serve on the trustee-clergy liason committee. Appointing a chaplain is rela tively new for the Huron-Perth board although it is a long tradition for many separate school boards. Access grants available to groups Non-profit community groups which want to improve physical access for disabled persons and senior citizens will be eligible for a $15 million grant program announ ced recently by Tony Ruprecht, the Ontario minister responsible for disabled persons. Mr. Ruprecht made the announ cement in the Legislature on behalf of his ministry and that of Ron Van Horne, ministerfor senior citizens. The access fund will be available this fall and will provide matching grants of up to $50,000 to private sector, non-profit organizations and agencies serving disabled persons and seniors. The allocation of $15 million is over three years, providing $2.5 million in each of the years for both seniors and disabled. “The improvement of access to community facilities is an impor tant element in this government’s commitment to the integration into community life of disabled persons and senior citizens,’’ Mr. Ruprecht said. “The elderly and particularly the frail elderly, should not be impeded from taking part in community activities because of physical impediments,’’ Mr. Van Horne added. Funds will be provided for renovations such as grab bars, ramps, elevators, door widening, alert systems for the hearing impaired and braille or other tractilefeaturesforthe visually impaired.
