problems that may cause expenses
of $4,000 to $5,000 with no
provision for the work in the town
budget, the council was told it may
have to decide which comes first:
drains or planned sidewalk re
placement.
Council, after taking a tour of
sidewalks in the village last month,
had decided sidewalks should be
replaced on Dinsley Street west of
Queen street along the north side;
Dinsley east of Queen along the
north side and on the west side of
Queen north of the senior citizens
apartments. There was no provi
sion in the budget for the sidewalk
repairs.
The matter was brought to a
head when council got cost figures
for repairs for a drain on Mill Street
that would solve flooding problems
for nearby homes. Installation of a
new catchbasin and manhole, 190
feet of 10 inch corragated pipe and
labour, granular material and
backhoe work pushed the cost to
the neighbourhood of $3,000.
Councillors had earlier looked at
the problem of a drain on Gypsy
Lane which would see a new drain
laid back into the block east of
Gypsy Lane to relieve pressure on
an existing drain that had caused a
backup, flooding the basement of a
homeowner Councillors did not
have a price on that drain readily
available but Reeve Albert Wasson
predicted it would be considerably
cheaper than the Mill Street drain.
The reeve said he knew town works
foreman Merv Ritchie had some
figures on the cost but he was away
on vacation.
Helen Grubb, clerk-treasurer,
pointed out that there was no
money for any of the programs in
the budget and said that if council
decided it needed drains it would
perhaps have to drop its sidewalk
plans.
Reeve Wasson suggested that
perhaps the problem would have to
be turned back to the staff to look at
the cost options more closely.
Councillor Lloyd Sippel said it
would be a ‘ ‘flip a coin” decision to
try to decide which drain problem
was more serious if council was
only able to do one. Councillor Bev
Elliott suggested that perhaps the
drains were more urgent than the
sidewalks since the sidewalks had
been in bad shape for years
anyway.
Councillors asked Mrs. Grubb if
there were any areas of saving in
the year’s expenses so far that
would allow the work but she said
that the figures for the first six
months of expenditures weren’t
available yet.
Council decided that with Mr.
