Don Armstrong of Brussels, right, incoming president of the Brussels Optimists Club, presents a cheque for $1,000 to Dale Newman, chairman of the Brussels, Morris and Grey Recreation Committee. The money is destined to help pay for new chairs for the BMG arena, purchased prior to the Homecoming Weekend on July 2-5. Horticultural Society holds picnic 'The Brussels and District Horti­ cultural picnic was held on July 15 in the Maitland Valley Conserva­ tion Authority Park where the beautiful setting added much to the enjoyment of the afternoon. The president, Jane White, conducted a business session which dealt mainly with plans for the Flower Show and Supper to be held on Wednesday, August 12 in the Anglican church from 4- 7 p.m. Secretary ’s and treasurer’s re­ ports were read and plaques for most points at the Rose Show were presented to Isobel Gibson, Jane White and Jean Bewley. Several lively games and a delicious supper were enjoyed. On August5 at 10 a.m. there will be a workshop for all juniors conducted by Jane White and Shirley Wheeler to bring the young people up to date on proper ways to prepare their flowers for showing and also how to make arrange­ ments. This is to fill a vacancy on council due to the resignation of a member of council. Any elector of the Municipality who is interested in serving as a council member for the remainder of the current term, and who is qualified to do so, should notify the clerk in writing prior to 5:00 p.m. local time, on Wednesday, July 22,1987 in order to be considered by council at the above mentioned meeting. Morris and Grey Recreation 18 teams in bowling tournament The Brussels Lawn Bowling Club held its mixed trebles tour­ nament Saturday, July 18 with 18 teams participating. Winners were: Buzz Whiteside and Mr. and Mrs. Len Brubacher, Elmira with three wins 45 plus six; CllffandPriscillaBrayand May Louttit, Wingham three wins 33; Reg and Margaret Robinson and Roy Elliott, Mitchell, two wins 46; John McTavish, Brampton and Alex and Edna McTavish, Wing­ ham two wins 42; Jim Coultes, George Inglis and Agnes Bieman, Brussels, 2 wins 37 plus four; Harvey McCallum, Alma Madill and Marjorie East, Blyth; Tom and Mabel Calhoun and Betty Dow, Mitchell, twowins32; DonandLois Haines and Ken McDougall, Clin­ ton, two wins 29; Jim Bowman, Jean Bewley and Jack Bowman, Brussels two wins 25. Sports were conducted by Mrs. Ruby Taylor of London and Mrs. Betty Breckenbridge of Wood- stock. A smorgasbord supper was enjoyedby all. Marilyn Higgins conducted the business for the meeting and officers for 1988 were chosen. Relatives were present from London, Woodstock, Guelph, Wingham, Brantford and Brus­ sels. The 1988 reunion will be held at the Bluevale Park on July 10. Mr. Lome McCrackin of Brus­ sels visited with Mrs. Lila Goll on Sunday. Committee, bringing a special fund to purchase new chairs for the BMG arena to a total of $3,500. Previously, the Brussels Lions Club had donated $1,500 to the fund and the Brussels Homecom­ ing Committee had donated $ 1,000 for the chairs, which had been purchased previous to the July 2-5 Homecoming weekend to ensure seating for the expected capacity crowds at the event. As well, Mr. Newman said that the Lions Club had paid for the re-painting of all the outside arena doors prior to the Homecoming, while members of the Optimist Club donated both time and material to repair and paint all the bleachers at Brussels’ main ball park. During his term in office which began last January, Mr. Newman said that the Brussels, Morris and Grey Catering Group had donated $7,000 to the Recreation Commit­ tee, tobe used to pay the insurance on the facility.
