John Roby, composer of the musictogowith Raymond Storey’s script for the musical-comc^ leads the band that plays hot jazz in a crowded backstage space. The music covers the late 1940’s, early 1950’s bebop period and goes along with Kerry Hackett’s fabu lous costumes to recreate the era. Besides John Roby who plays keyboards, other members of the band are Alex Dean on saxophone, Brian O’Kane, trumpet, Steve Lucas, bass and Mark Congram on drums. The musicians perform in a corridor-like space about six by 16 feet directly behind the back wall of the set. They work in the dark except for small lights on their music stands to illuminate the musical score. They’ve never actually seen a performance of the show only heard what’s happening over the headphones they wear. They do get a glimpse of the actors hurrying on and off stage through one end of their tiny room. John Roby is, of course, a veteran of the Festival who has appeared off and on since 1980. The others are newcomers to Blyth although Mark Congram has a local connection. His parents were originally from Wingham and his paternal grandparents Wilfrid and Elsie Congram, still reside there. The show has won high praise from critics and, surprisingly, unlike some of the other shows, there are still tickets available for most performances. THE CLEAN-UP BRIGADE Put yukkies in their place!
