Local decrease leads population decline The population of Huron County decreased slightly between the years of 1981 and 1986, according to Statistics Canada, which recent­ ly released the details of the 1986 national census. The official population of the countyinl981 was56,127. In 1986, the final count was 55,996, a drop of 131 people or 0.2 per cent. The year-old figures indicate that the populations of both Brussels and Blyth dropped during that five-year period. Blyth dropp­ ed by 3.7 percent, from 926 to#892; while Brussels apparently dropped by about 1.1 per cent, from 957 to 946. Blyth had 343 occupied private dwellings in 1986, while Brussels had 370. Among the other villages in the county, Bayfield showed the lar­ gest growth between the two census periods, jumping from a population of 649 residents in 1981 to 734 in 1986, an increase of 13.1 per cent. Hensail and Zurich also showed population increases: Hensall’s population rose from 992 to 1,089, an increase of 9.8 per cent; while Zurich increased from 785 to 824, an increase of 5 per cent. Wingham was listed as the fastest-growing town in the coun­ ty , with a population increase of 1.9 per cent (from 2,897 to 2,952). Clinton and Seaforth each showed a population increase of 1.6 per cent (from 3,076 to 3,124 in Clinton, and from 2,114 to 2,148 in Seaforth); while Exeter showed a 1 percentincrease, andGoderich only a. 3 per cent rise in population. The bulk of the population decrease in Huron County came in the rural areas, with 12out of the 16 townships reporting a decline in population between 1981 and 1986. MorrisTownship reported an increase of .7 per cent, from 1,652 to 1,664 residents; Grey dropped from 1,976 to 1,889, a decrease of 4.4 per cent; East Wawanosh dropped from 1,127 to 1,107, a decrease of 1.8 per cent; West Wawanosh went from 1,371 to 1,365, a decrease of .4 per cent; Hullett dropped from 1,936 to 1,862, a decrease of 3.8 per cent; McKillop went from 1,486 to 1,398, a drop of 5.9 per cent; Howick dropped from 3,072 to 3,037, or 1.1 per cent; and Turnberry’s popula­ tion rose by 1.7per cent, from 1,505 to 1,530. and these kids have a predictable happy summer in store for them. You can help keep them smiling by do­ ing your part as a concerned citizen and community driver. Remember to look and drive carefully in and around school grounds and neighborhood streets where vacationing children are bound to play! By observing all traffic signals and using cautious and preventive driv­ ing methods, you will help to assure these kids of a great summer and brand new school year ahead.
