Help kids cope with weight problem BY CATHY THOMSON NUTRITION CONSULTANT HURON COUNTY HEALTH UNIT There is a disturbingly high preoccupation with thinness among Canadians to-day and many parents worry abouttheir child ren’s weight. After all, there has been a lot of publicity warning us that fat children become fat adults. However, this obsession to be thin can be very damaging to our children’s feelings of self/worth. Because of our obsession with thinness we tend to view obesity as a personal problem and place blame directly on the individual. It’s this victim blaming that causes low self-esteem infat children. The world around them seems to be sayingthatthey are inadequate because they can’t lose weight. Most of us feel pressured to lose weight. The desirability of looking thin begins to affect children at a very young age. A study done by Big Sisters in London found that 2/3 of the 13 year old girls surveyed had dieted even though only half that many felt they were over weight. Families can have a positive influence on a child’s self-image. Parents can act as role models, reinforce certain behaviours and regulate how children will react to events around them. Children without weight pro blems can get caught up in the As parents, we sometimes give children conflicting messages about eating which leave them confused. For example, children may be rewarded with candy for good behaviour and the next day told not to eat candy because it’s fattening or bad for them. Adult images of the right body size for children are often not realistic. The nutritional adequacy of a diet which would result in a thinner child must be considered. Children grow and develop at such different rates, that it is difficult to determine what is normal growth. For example, many parents be lieve that a fat baby will become a fat adult. Research has shown that this is not so. This misconception may lead parents to severely restrict their infant’s diet and cause confusion about how and what to feed. adult world’s excessive concern about weight. A low self-esteem in these children may result in severe, self-imposed dietary re strictions in an attempt to lose a few pounds. These diets which are not even needed in the first place are usually very poor nutritionally and thus can be detrimental to the child’s health. As adults we need to re-evaluate our attitudes and beliefs about an ideal body shape for our children. We need to remind ourselves that the physical and emotional health of our children is more important than how great they look in designer jeans. Each child needs recognition as an individual. All children need love and support regardless of shape or size. As parents and responsible commun ity members, we need to help children develop a feeling of self-worth that is not dependent on their body weight.
