HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 1987-06-24, Page 11Auburn UCW Unit II discusses gardens Unit II of the U.C.W. was held at Knox United Church on June 17 at the Church with Mrs. Allan Webster, Mrs. Violet Durnin and Mrs. Tom Lawlor in charge. “Gardens” was the topic. Mrs. Durnin opened the meeting with a reading “In Your Own Backyard.’’ The hymn, “For the Beauty of the Earth” was sung with Marjorie McDougall as pianist. The medita­ tion was read by Mrs. Webster with scripture read by Mrs. Lawlor. Prayer was given by Mrs. Lawlor. A recipe for Auburn U.C.W. Knox holds service Pastor Shuttleworth conducted the Sunday morning service at Knox United Church with Organ Prelude by Mrs. Gordon Gross. The Junior choir sang “I Love the Lord" under the direction of Mrs. Allan Webster and Mrs. Gordon Gross as pianist. Prayer of Invocation and Life and Work of the church were given. The hymn, “I am Thine, O Lord” was sung. Prayer of Confession and Words of Assurance were given by the pastor followed by the Lord’s Prayer. The Junior Choir sang “Two Couple celebrates 45 years Leonaand Joe Hickey of RR 2, Auburn were honoured at an open house attended by about 100 people at the Auburn Community Hall on Sunday, May 3. The couple had been married May 2, 1942 in Riversdale church. Afterward a dinner was held at the family home with the couple’s children and their families serving a meal for 80 close friends and relatives. Special guest for the weekend was Joe’s sister Margar­ ite from Amherst, Nova Scotia. Other guests were present from Sarnia, London, Oshawa, Barrie, Walkerton, Hanover and the Au­ burn area. garden was given by Mrs. Webster and everyone write it out. Offering was received and dedicated by Mrs. Webster. The roll call was answered by 14 giving their second name. The hymn, “Icometothe Garden’’ was sung and the meet­ ing was then turned over to the President Mrs. Peter Verbeek. Visiting was arranged and plans for the 25th Anniversary general meeting were made. Grace was sung. Lunch was served by Mrs. Webster, Mrs. Durnin and Mrs. Lawlor and a social time closed the meeting. Little Fishes and Five Loaves ot Bread”. The children’s hymn, “Come Let Us Sing of a Wonderful Love ’ ’ was sung and the pastor told the children’s story and they went to Junior Congregation with their teachers. The pastor’s sermon was entitled “The Faith of a Father’’. Offering was received by Allan Webster and Lawrence Plaetzer. The hymn, ‘ ‘ Since Jesus Came Into My heart’’ was sung. The pastor pronounced the Benediction and theserviceclosed with the Con­ gregational Benediction, “Lord We Pray”. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24, 1987. PAGE 11. Despite the long road ahead the young competitors were anxious to get going when the Pro-life bike-a-thon began at Blyth Christian Reformed Church on Saturday. Forty-seven cyclists took part and raised over $6,000 to support Pro-life activities. The couple have nine children and 20 grandchildren: Marian and Frank Hallahan and family, Blyth; Bob and Brenda Hickey, and family, Barrie; Jim and Teresa Hickey and family, Auburn; Con­ nie and Paul Black and family, Lucknow; John and Judy Hickey andfamily, Port Albert; Joanne Phelan and sons and Bob Riehl, Clinton; George and Sylke Hickey, Blyth; Phyllis and Rob Hanson, Thorndale and Steven Hickey, Auburn. Among the many gifts received were greetings from the Prime Minister of Canada, the Premier of Ontario and a Papal Blessing.
