HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 1987-06-24, Page 3The “Citizen of the Year” award for Blyth was presented to Franklin and Cenetta Bainton on Friday by Sheila Richards, member of the board of directors of The Citizen. The couple was nominated for their long years of contributions to the community. The presentation was made during a cocktail party at the Bainton home prior to the Blyth Festival opening. Council briefs Hotel owner says no change planned There has been no application to change the Blyth Inn from a Hotel to a tavern, owner Peter Irwin told Blyth Village Council June 9. Mr. Irwin said because of some renovations being considered he had written to the Liquor Licencing Board of Ontario (LLBO) asking what would be involved in such a change. He had not, however, requested it. He was appearing before council at council’s request after last month council had received a letter from the LLBO asking for its comments on an application to change the licence of the hotel. Mr. Irwin said someone at the LLBO had obviously jumped to conclu­ sions. He outlined for council some Swinging Seniors take a trip The June meeting of the Blyth Swinging Seniors took the form of an enjoyable bus trip to points North. This was in conj unction with the Horticulture Society. The first stop was at the Pine River cheese factory. This is quite a new, modern factory where the latest methods are used. Bruce Agra Park was the next place visited. To see an acre of tomatoes in a green house was an interesting sight. There were also many bedding plants such as marigolds, impatience and petun­ ias. Bruce Nuclear Energy Centre was the next stop where visitors saw a very informative movie on the power development. The popu­ lation here is just about half of what it used to be. A highlight here was being treated to a delicious full course meal. Members then travelled to FevershamTroutFarm. Itwas a fascinatingsighttosee so many fish swimming around. Hills Gardens was the last stop. Those who belonged to the Horti­ culture Society were especially interested as the owner here had been the speaker at one of their meetings. Supper at Mount Forest climaxed a very educational and interesting trip. The July meeting will be a picnic at St. Christopher’s Beach, south at Goderich on Wednesday, July 22 at 12 noon. A special event coming up is the dinner at Huron view on Thursday, June 25 at 12:45 at a cost of $300. There will also be a program with entertainment by the Huron Strings. It is hoped a good number will attend. possible renovations being con­ sidered. ***** Merv Ritchie, town foreman, reported that most of the paving in the village has been completed for the year with some shoulder work to be done later. He also reported that 12 new street lights at a cost of $99 each had been purchased. ***** Council approved the naming of Helen Grubb, clerk-treasurer as the “trainee” under a grant program from the province. The program will pay $7,500 for the first year. Mrs. Grubb will take a course at Fanshawe College one night a week for 12 weeks as part of the training. There wasn’t much use calling the Ontario Provincial Police, he said, because “they’d come along Tues­ day of next week.”***** Estimates put the cost of alterations to the buiidiiig tohouse the lift for the handicapped at the Blyth and District Community Centre at nearly $23,000, Council­ lor William Howson reported from the arena board meeting. This is considerably above the first pre­ diction and means the cost of the project will increase. People The Radford Group held its second annual fish derby at the Radford pond south of Blyth. Winner of the prize for largest fish was Jason McDougall and Kurt Ritchie had the smallest fish. Daryl Govier was presented with a gift on the occasion of his graduation from Centennial College as a Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic. When Louis and Margaret Phel­ an were invited out for dinner, Sunday, June 14 by their son Jim, little did they know of the surprise awaiting them. At the Bedford Hotel, Goderich, a waitress opened a door to reveal a roomful of smiling faces calling out Surprise!! Their family had ar- rangeda40th wedding anniver­ sary surprise for their parents. They enjoyed a smorgasbord dinner along with their family, grandchildren, brothers and sis­ ters. After the opening of gifts, a social evening was spent reminiscing and visiting. The Legion’s Decoration Day service at the Blyth Union Ceme­ tery on Sunday, June 14, resulted in a donation of $184.74 to the cemetery. Collection for the day was $204.74. Expenses were $20. New minister for United Church The Blyth community welcomes a new minister to the village. On Monday, June 29 Rev. Lorenzo Ramirez, his wife Norma and children John and Abigail will take up residence in the United Church Manse.
