Three winners at the Brussels Lawn Bowling Tournament last Wednesday were in keen competition throughout the day, with Wilma Merrifield of Atwood, left, finishing in seventh position, Ada Pethwick of Mitchell, centre, finishing in first place, and Jean Bewley of Brussels, right, president of the Brussels Club, finishing in fourth place. Grate Grill Bottom Stephens ends best ever season for CHSS student Vivienne Stephens, 15, of Blyth ended the most successful track and field season any Central Huron Secondary athlete has ever had when she took fourth and one fifth placefinishesin the all-Ontario track and field championships in Hamilton May 29 and 30. The “midget” sprinter became the first CHSS student to ever make it to the final heat of an all-Ontario meet when she ran a 12.7 second 100m. sprint to qualify for the finals. In the finals she set a new personal best, lowering her time to 12.67 seconds to place fourth in the event. On the Saturday she won her way to the finals again with a 26.84 second time in the 200 m. In the final she lowered that time to 26.6 seconds to tie fourth place. She also mcved up a notch to junior to run the all-important anchor-leg for the CHSS junior girls4x 100m. relay team along with Karen Uyl, Susan Govenlock and Lisa Beattie. This was the first Brussels PS track champions declared by Dan Beuermann After a lot of huffing and puffing they made it through the day on Monday, June 1. All of the grades participated in Track and Field with the exception of kindergarten and grade one. Pupils ran miles, jumped to new heights and threw for all they were worth. Some of the favourite events were the shot put (for bantam and atom), thqjsoftball throw (Tyke and Mite), the high jump and the races. The overall winners were for mite boys, Andrew Exel, Josh Beuermann and Steven Machan while the winners fof/the girls were Krista Hunter, Janice Jacklin and Leslie Stretton. The winners for the tyke boys were Randy Beuermann, Michael Dauphin and Shane Wil­ son. The winnersfor the girls were Kim Mulvey, Stacy Hahn and Angie Yoon. The winners for the atom boys were Brad Beuermann, Tim Ma- time a CHSS relay team had ever made it past the regional track meet. Going into the provincial event the team was ranked 18th of the 21 teams in competition and so had the disadvantage of the outside lane in the first heat. They turned in their fastest time of the year at 50.84 seconds to place second in the heat and qualify for the finals. They couldn’t match that time as they ran 51.05 in the final to place fifth. Their heat time is a new school record. This final race completed a season which was the most suc­ cessful for any athlete in track and field ever in Central Huron history. Vivienne finished first in the 100 meter at Huron-Perth setting a new record of 12.9 seconds, won the 200 meter as well, won the gold medallions in the 100 meter and the 200 meter at WOSS A, finished first in the WestRegionalsinthe 200 meter and second in the 100 meter and fourth in the two events at OFSAA. chan and Brett Clarkson, The girls winners were Carla Johnston, Tricia Duskocy and Kelly Overholt. Remember a meeting report is not the minutes of the meeting. Peopleare more interested in what the guest speaker had to say than the fact the treasurer’s report and the minutes were read. •4. Winners were: first with three wins 41 plus four, Reg. Robinson and Ada Pethick, Mitchell; second with two wins 40 plus one, Don and Lois Haines, Clinton; third with two wins 34 plus two, Jim and Jack • Bowman; fourth with two wins 31 plusfour; Les Douglas and Jean Bewley, Brussels; fifth with two wins 29 plus three, Jack Broughton and Vera Lindnor, Atwood; sixth with two wins 25, Charlie and Wilma Merrifield, Atwood; seven­ th with two wins 24, George Inglis and Agnes Bieman, Brussels; Consolation - Bill and Grace Hewitt, Atwood. A casserole supper was served by the Brussels ladies between the second and third games. The Brussels Club will welcome new members. If anyone is inter­ ested, please come Monday or Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. during June or Monday and Thursday evenings in July and August. Monday nights are Jitney nights and Wednesday practice.
