On Saturday she lowered her own personal best in the midget girls 100 m. by a 10th of a second to 12.7 seconds but still finished second to Giselle Poulin of Wind sor L’Essor, who ran a 12.4. In the 200 m. however, an event her coach has called her best, she won the event in 26.6 even though being a 10th of a second off her mark a week earlier in the W.O.S.S.A. Championships. Lori Appleby, expecting to renew her rivallry with Tillson- burg’sSueBarzo, found both of them finishing down the line. In the shot put, Barzo finished third and Lori placing fourth, but still qualifying for the Ontario cham pionship with a throw of 11.28 m. The story was not so good for either of them in the discus however as Tashy Chase of Windsor Lowe’s34.24 m. throw won the event and the only qualification for the provincial championships. A business for the birds Continued from page 5 later with chickens. They also operated Blyth Transport. Later they got involved in raising exotic breeds of chickens, and they shipped more than 50 varieties all over Canada. They owned stores in Blyth (in fact Irene is re-opening Blyth Variety in June). They took some time off from this busy life to travel, then got back into breeding the birds and the job just got bigger and bigger. Harm says he likes the challenge of the business and he likes working with animals. Even when he was on the farm, he says, it was working with animals he liked best, rather than working with machines. Besides, he says, your mind has to be occupied by something. “If I want to go on holidays I want to be able to find time, but if I have to go on vacation to kill time, I don ’ t want to,” he says. Killing time is one thing the Thelans don’t need to worry about.
