Madill High Homecoming Update • ir ar BY TOBY RAINEY With only a month to go before the big party, Brussels’ Home- coming plans move into high gear with the publication this week of a full-page ad in the Citizen outlining someofthe major events taking place over the four-day weekend. One of the major reasons for placing the ad at this time is to invite early entries for the sporting events, some of which have limited registration and are already filling up,'according to Don Crawford, Sports Committee chairman for the Homecoming. The Mush-ball tournament, for instance, which begins Friday evening and contin ues all day Saturday can only accommodate eight teams and has already attracted a lot of interest. According to Don, Mush-ball is a fast-growing event which first hit the sports scene a couple of years ago, and is second only to donkey baseball in the number of laughs per inning it can provide. Played under slow-pitch rules using a softball-size soft (or “mushy” ball) which, Don says, can do “incred ible things,” it is a game which anybody can learn in short order. The ideal Mush-ball team con sists of five male and five female players, but Don says the mix can vary, as long as there are more ladies than men on any team. Only the first eight entries can be accepted, he says, at an entry fee of $60 per team. Joe Seili at Huron Feeding Systems (call 887-6289) has entry forms for the event, but pre-regi- stration for any of the adult sporting events may be arranged by calling Don Crawford at 887- 6854, while Neil Beuermann at 887-9598 will take entries for the kids’ events. Space may also limit the number of entries permitted in both the Soap Box Derby on Saturday afternoon and the Bathtub races on Sunday afternoon, so pre-registra- tion is a good idea for these: we’ll try to get more information on both for next week’s Update. Entrants for most of the other events can be registered at the time of the event, but it wouldn’t hurt to call and make sure you are not left out. Parade entries should be made early, too, to give organizers some idea of the space needed, although last minute entries may be made the day of the parade, which gets underway at 12:30 p.m. on Satur day (or at 1:30p.m. Sunday, in case of rain). A parade Entry Form is included with the Homecoming advertisement; it should be mailed to either event co-chairman Harold Bridge or Dave Hastings, both of Brussels, as soon as possible. Harold can also be reached at 887-6003; Dave at 887-6983, if any further information is needed. More people are still needed to help out with most of the events, according to Homecoming Chair man Gerry Wheeler, who can usually be found within a 50-mile radius of Brussels, although it might be easier to call Secretary Mary Lowe at 887-6923 to find out what you can do to make this party the best one ever. The next Homecoming general meeting is at 8 p.m. on Monday, June 8, so plan to attend. Remember, too, that The Citizen is putting together a very special issue to commemorate Brussels’ 115th birthday, and URGENTLY needs any old photos of Brussels people, buildings or scenes, with identification and/or information, for use in this souvenir edition. We would also like updated histories on ALL business and organizations which have been part of the village over the past 115 years and more, but we need it SOON! Material may be left at the Citizen office in Brussels at any time (it’s open 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, but there is a mail slot in the door for other times). Label all material clearly with your name and a contact phone number, and it will be carefully returned to you as soon as we are through with it. Further information on the special edition may be obtained by caling Toby Rainey at the Blyth office (523-4792 or 523-4872), or at home (887-9789) at any time. School Formal was held at Wing ham.
