Mrs. Edna McLellan, Blyth council looks at drain problem A complaint from a Gypsy Lane homeowner will have Blyth council looking into drain problems in the area before development of a new apartment building makes the problem worse. In a letter to council dealt with at the May meeting May 12, Mason Bailey said that for the first time in more than a decade his basement was flooded last fall, after a new roadway was put into Lion’s Park just north of his house. He also noted that catchbasins had been installed on both sides of his property by the village which allows water to enter the drain more quickly, overloading it and making it back up into his basement. He pointed out the danger of even more water being put into the drain from the run off from roof and parking area of the new eight-unit apartment building being built just to the south of his house. He asked council if something could be done to take more of the runoff water across to the west side of Gypsy lane and let it run into the agricultural park where it could be absorbed more slowly, taking the pressure off the drain on the east side of the street. Council agreed to look into the problem and have a site meeting to see what drains to where and see if a solution to the problem can’t be found. Mrs. Leona Armstrong, Mrs. Dons McCall, Mrs. Kathy Bridge and Mrs. Ida Evans make up the committee in charge of the events of the 115th Anniversary of Brussels which pertain to the W.I. Mrs. Steffler introduced the guest speaker, Mrs. Goldie Ruth erford of Atwood who showed slides of her exchange trip to England and up to Scotland. They were hosted by W.I. members in England who had come to this area previously. Mrs. Rutherford gave a splendid commentary on her pictures. Mrs. Ruth Galbraith gave the motto “Is the W.I. keeping up with the times” which gave lots of proof that we are. The next meeting on June 10, will take the form of a bus trip to the Erland Lee Home at Stoney Creek and then to Dundas to the famous greenhouse. McCall new MVCA chairman At the May 13 Executive Com mittee meeting of the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority, Chairman Vince Judge of Listowel asked the Executive to appoint Vice-Chairman Bruce McCall of Brussels to the M.V.C.A. Chair man’s position for the remainder of Mr. Judge’s term. Citing personal responsibilities and an increased workload, Mr. Judge said he has found it difficult to make the time commitment necessary for the Chairman’s position. “I have enjoyed the work of the Authority and really appreciate the support that Authority members have given me” said Mr. Judge, “however I will not seek a reappointment to the Authority.” The M.V.C.A. Executive accep ted Mr. Judge’s resignation with regret and wished him well in his future endeavours. rtL Phone 357-1630 for 24 hour movie information Playing from Friday to Thursday, May 22nd to 28th Showtimes: Friday & Saturday at7:00and9:00p.m. Sunday to Thursday One show each evening at 8:00p.m. KIM BASINGER ™CEW1LUS • 524-9981 iLXn BOX OFFICE OPENS 8:00 P.M. achievement in clean amusement.
