Salvation Army Captain Borden Linkletter and Blyth Lions Club treasurer Ernie Phillips met last week to discuss the Army’s annual Red Shield fund-raising campaign. The Blyth Lions are spearheading the local fund drive, with a goal of $11,700 set for the Wingham District. Red Shield appeal underway The Salvation Army's National Red Shield Appeal is now under­ way across Canada, with a goal of $11,700 targeted for the Wingham and district area. Captain Borden Linkletter of Wingham said that his office is already “getting an excellent response” back from the mail-out campaign which was done Accident sends 2 to hospital throughout the area late last week. The fund-raising drive in the Blyth area is being spearheaded by the Blyth Lions Club, in the Brussels area by Doug and Evelyn Purdy, and in the Belgrave area by Tom and Shirley Wharton. All funds raised locally go into the many projects sponsored by the An accident on Morris Sideroad 10, just north of Concession 9 on Friday sent two London youths to hospital with minor injuries and resulted in $1,500 damage to their 1981 car. Darin Powers, 17, and Terrance Bennett, 16, were taken to Wing­ ham and District Hospital by ambulance after their car skidded off the road and rolled over the ditch shortly before 2 p.m. on May 8. The driver, Mr. Powers, has been charged with careless driv­ ing. Salvation Army in the area, including an emergency shelter, a Harbour Lights centre, homes for unwed mothers, senior citizen’s homes, youth camps, a suicide prevention centre and Christmas assistance for needy families. The national target for the May campaign is more than $20 million, withanappealrunningin news­ papers and on television through­ out the month. Salvation Army assistance is kept strictly confiden­ tial, and is delivered to the lonely, desperate, destitute and forgotten people of Canada on a round-the- clock basis, whenever the need arises. Phone 887-9250 Achievement night held Members from 13 district 4-H clubs wound up their “Surviving with Style” project by holding an Achievement Program at Grey Central Public School at Ethel on May 5, one of the five such evenings hosted by the 450 young people who have taken part in the project from all parts of Huron County. During the program, Shona Rae of RR 1, Wroxeter received a framed picture in recognition of the 24, 4-H projects she has complet­ ed; Shelly Lockie of RR 2, Gorrie andMary-AnneGibsonofRR 1, Fordwich, received awards for completing 12 projects; and Tessa Lowes and Lisa Pennington, both of Brussels, Pat Cowman of RR 2, Bluevale, and Corrie-Lynn Fatt of RR 2, Gorrie, all received awards for completing six projects. GorrieI4-HClubleader Edna Fairies was presented with a pin in recognition of her 15 years as a club leader, and Joan Smith of the Ethel I club received her five-year pin from OMAF representative Ri­ chard Hamilton. Youth Leader Linda Janes of the Brussels I Club introduced the leaders and presented them with their badges, then club members performed a number of skits and monologues for the entertainment of the large crowd of parents and supporters who attended the lively display. Members and Youth Leaders from the Brussels I, II and III Clubs, from Ethel, Bluevale and Fordwich I and III clubs; and from the Cranbrook, Wroxeter, Gorrie I and Lakelet I Clubs all took part in the displays and demonstrations. Daughter surprised over new car wm Gloria Bowman of Listowel, daughter of Archie and Doris Jacklin was pleasantly surprised recently to learn that she had won a 1987 Chevrolet Cavalier. Her mother had purchased a ticket from the Air Cadets and forgot to tell Gloria. She was the second prize winner for the Province of Ontario. suddenly ELVIE FRANCES LEWINGTON Elvie Frances Lewington of RR 2, Brussels, passed away suddenly May 5, 1987 in Englehart and District Hospital, Englehart, On­ tario. She was 72 years of age. She was born in Atworth, England and married Wilson Ernest Lewington who predeceas­ ed her in 1973. She is survived by two children, Mary, Mrs. Doug Lazenby of Earlton and Ernie and his wife Annette, RR 2, Brussels. Also surviving are five grandchild­ ren as well as three sisters and two brotherslivingin England. Two brothers predeceased her. The funeral service was held May 8 from the Brussels Chapel of the M.L. Watts Funeral Homes. Rev. Archie Robertson was in charge of the service. Interment was in Brussels Cemetery. People around Cranbrook Flowers in memory of the late Mrs. Clare Veitch were placed in the church May 3 by her family. Mrs. Goldwin Knight spent a recent weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Hector Knight, Picton. Mrs. Donald Perrie and family visited on May 3 weekend with Rev. Jas and Mrs. Perrie and family, North Pelham. Mr. and Mrs. Doug Thiel, Kitchener, visited on May 3 with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Conley. Other Wl holds plant auction The May meeting of the Cran­ brook W.I. was held May 7 at the home of Mrs. Wilfred Strickler with 10 members and four visitors enjoying a lively plant auction. The auctioneer, Mrs. John Vanass had no trouble getting bids. After the auction all went in from the garage sale and had coffee. The meeting opened in the usual way callers included Mr. and Mrs. Bert van Donkersgoed, West Mon­ trose, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Remley, Guelph. Mrs. Don Cotton was admitted to University Hospital, London, on May 4 and underwent surgery May 5. She is reported doing nicely. Several members of the W. M. S. attended the special W.M.S. meeting in Atwood Presbyterian Church, Wednesday, May 6 when Mrs. Harbottle was guest speaker. with the Mary Stewart Collect and the Lord’s Prayer. Minutes were read and approved. A minute’s silence was held in memory of a very faithful member, Mrs. Clare Veitch. Meetings and programs were planned for 1987-88. Mrs. G. Knight and Mrs. Bob Locking served lunch. The June meeting will be a mystery car tour.
