Pipe Band celebrates 35th anniversary The Brussels Legion Pipe Band is celebrating its 35th birthday May 23 with a banquet for present and former members of the band membership of 23. There are two original members still in the band: Tom MacFarlane and Ross Ben- [deceased], Ken Coleman [deceased], Walter MacFarlane, Tom McFarlane, David Hastings [deceased], Jack Willis, Ross Bennett, Orwell Elliott [deceased] and George Elliott [deceased]. Brussels Legion Pipe Band will celebrate its 35th anniversary May 23 with a dinner and dance. Members of the original pipe band were: [left to right] Cal Krauter, Ross Duncan, Gordon Krauter, Ray Bronson with a dance to follow. The band started with only 12 members but through the years has increased in size to the present nett. People Compiled by Marilyn Higgins On Tuesday, May 5, the Rebe- kah’shelda microwave cooking demonstration to a capacity crowd. Tips were handed out on what to do and use with your microwave. Many different and interesting items were cooked. Two Tupper­ ware representatives were in attendance to show their products also. Door prizes were drawn with the lucky winners being: Annette Stephenson, Betty Cardiff, Jean Fraser, Jane Hall, Susan McNeil, Helen Heatherington, Gert Krotch, Edith Warwick, Sue Wil­ son, Gale McArter, Jean Bridge, Leona Connelly, Helen Cameron, Leola Hood, Sylvia Stevenson, Mary Nichol, Carol Long, Donna Knight and Evelyn Mair. Everyone got to taste the items that were cooked along with coffee. The microwaves were donated for the evening by McDonald Home Hard­ ware and Oldfield’s Pro Hardware. Proceeds from the evening went towards the building fund for the Oddfellow’s and Rebekah Lodge. Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Shera of Wingham visited Wednesday night with Mr. and Mrs. Alvie Higgins. Dale, Judy, Alicia and Jason Wheeler of Lucan and Todd Wheeler of Preston were home with their parents on Mother’s Day. They then attended the christening of Jessica Wheeler, daughter of Cheryl and Murray Wheeler in Londesboro. Visitors with Mrs. Lila Goll on Sunday were her nephew Dick Gray of Milverton and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Nethercott of Atwood. Mr. and Mrs. Ken Good and Matthewof Auburn visited with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Henry Exel and family on Saturday. Visitors on Saturday evening for supper with Jack, Marilyn and Ken Higgins included Miss Dale Mc­ Farlan, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Higgins, Dennis and Ronald of Blyth, Mr. and Mrs. Alvie Higgins, Mrs. Lila Goll, Mr. andMrs. John Oliver, Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Lamont and Mike Smith. A number of the Brussels Crusaders attended the wedding and reception of Alex Henderson and Carol on Saturday, May9atthe Bluevale Presbyterian Church with the reception held in the B. M. & G. Community Centre. Alex is the trainer for the Brussels Inter­ mediate Hockey Team. Visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Exel on Mother’s Day were Mr. and Mrs. Eric Exel and family of Whitechurch, Mr. and Mrs. Hank Haasnoot, Mr. and Mrs. Randy Roppel and family of Tiverton, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Exel and family and Mrs. Ann Vader. Congratulations to Doug McAr­ ter who has designed two new homes for Brussels, one has already been placed on its founda­ tion, the other will be by the time the paper is out. Doug is employed with Royal Homes of Wingham. Mrs. David Boynton was the guest ofhonour at a picnic lunch provided by several friends at The Summer Place last Thursday cele­ brating the opening of her new garden shop and bonne fete. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kennedy of Ottawa were Mother’s Day week­ end visitors with Mrs. R. W. Kennedy. A farewell party was held for Jeff Brown, London, at the home of Barbara Brown May 2. Guests included his grandmother Mrs. Edna Needham of Georgetown, sister Allison Smith, Eastern Passage, N.S. and other family members from Woodstock and Waterloo. Jeff left for Japan May The band played in many parades in southwestern Ontario as well as in Michigan. Local residents enjoy the Ceilidh and Robbie Burns dance, sponsored each year by the band.
