Rock and roll greats to play at Grand Bend Rock and roll is here to stay, a fact which will be reinforced with performances by Jan and Dean, Del Shannon and Robbie Lane and the Disciples at the Huron Country Playhouse this summer. Dutch ambassador at Klompen Feest In 1961, Del Shannon roared out of Battle Creek, Mich, writing and recording four smash hits in one year including “Runaway” and “Hats Off To Larry”. “Little Town Flirt” was one of his 1962 hits in which the style sounded amazingly like The Beatles, Searchers and Hollies. Very few artists have sustained a successful careerfor20years, even more rare is one who sounds as creative and contemporary in 1987 as 1967. Del Shannon will appear at the Huron Country Playhouse on July 12. at Friday night dances in Rich mond Hill, Aurora and New Market. They were national superstars then with a hit television show - “It’s Happening” and a faithful following that tuned in every week to hear the latest in rock music. The 22-year veteran of show business has represented such bands as Triumph and The Good Brothers, but his break came in 1963 when Ronnie Hawkins asked the group to play at Yonge St. Tavern in Toronto. Singing such rhythm and blues as “Fannie Mae” and “Ain’t Love On August 30 Jan and Dean will perform two shows at the play house. “Surf City”, “Dead Man’s Curve” and “Little Old Lady” were and still remain favorites of the 50s and 60s. Tickets for all performances are available at the Huron Country Playhouse. SEAFORTH 527-0220 ‘DtxieleeIM Born and raised in Willowdale, Robbie Lane got his start with the Disciples in 1962 by “doing gigs” a Funny Thing”, the group began attracting a large following.
