Entertainment Students win in music festival More TV choice in Sept 1988 Bluevale area piano students achieved much success in the Walkerton Music Festival. They received awards of four firsts, seven seconds, and three thirds. Those participating were Dana and Tatum Mathers, Marlene Albers, Jim and Pat Croman, Jan, Jeremy and Joanne Van Keulan, Lori and Susie Black and Carla Johnston. Tatum Mathers received first award for sight playing with a mark of 88 per cent. This break is advantageous for the local people who tune into these stations. The divorce will increase local programming on these sta­ tions to 30.5 hours a week from 19.5,24 hours of which will be news and more publicaffairs. CKNX will expand its local production to 20 hours a week. As a result of all the extra activity, the CFPL will gradually hire up to 30 employees. CBC service will be continued in the area through a series of UHF (ultra-high frequency) transmit­ ters to be built in Wingham, .............................................. ..... ............... AT THE MOVIES Beginning in September 1988 local viewers will have a new television service but they’ll also need new equipment to receive service they’ve been used to. Independence was granted to CFPL-TV London and sister station CKNX-TV in Wingham of the CBC Network. The disaffiliation will occur as of August 31 next year. The stations have been affiliated by CBC for 34 years to a viewing audience of 1.5 million. Bob Elsdon, CFPL Broadcasting Ltd. These will provide the CBLT-Toronto signal. For cable viewers this will mean that one American channel is bumped from the basic cable service to accommodate both the new independent stations and the CBC service. Non-cable viewers may require new UHF antennaes to pull in the CBC signal. CBC will not be allowed to solicit local advertising in the CKNX- CFPL coverage area because it’s against CRTC policy to allow this vhen there is no news or produc­ tion bureau in the vicinity. The public now has a choice whether to watch the public < network that CBC will become or the alternative service of fully independent stations.
