Entertainment Students win in music festival
More TV choice in Sept 1988
Bluevale area piano students
achieved much success in the
Walkerton Music Festival. They
received awards of four firsts,
seven seconds, and three thirds.
Those participating were Dana and
Tatum Mathers, Marlene Albers,
Jim and Pat Croman, Jan, Jeremy
and Joanne Van Keulan, Lori and
Susie Black and Carla Johnston.
Tatum Mathers received first
award for sight playing with a mark
of 88 per cent.
This break is advantageous for
the local people who tune into these
stations. The divorce will increase
local programming on these sta
tions to 30.5 hours a week from
19.5,24 hours of which will be news
and more publicaffairs. CKNX will
expand its local production to 20
hours a week.
As a result of all the extra
activity, the CFPL will gradually
hire up to 30 employees.
CBC service will be continued in
the area through a series of UHF
(ultra-high frequency) transmit
ters to be built in Wingham,

—Bill Harru, AT THE MOVIES/SHOWTIME
My life’s been destroyed by a blind date

'kiriric . A farce that already
qualifies as a screen classic?
-Rex Reed. AT THE MOVIES
Beginning in September 1988
local viewers will have a new
television service but they’ll also
need new equipment to receive
service they’ve been used to.
Independence was granted to
CFPL-TV London and sister station
CKNX-TV in Wingham of the CBC
Network. The disaffiliation will
occur as of August 31 next year.
The stations have been affiliated
by CBC for 34 years to a viewing
audience of 1.5 million. Bob
Elsdon, CFPL Broadcasting Ltd.
President said “It’s a win-win
situation for our audience.”

Sarnia, London, Kitchener and the
Blenheim/Chatham area. These
will provide the CBLT-Toronto
signal. For cable viewers this will
mean that one American channel is
bumped from the basic cable
service to accommodate both the
new independent stations and the
CBC service.
Non-cable viewers may require
new UHF antennaes to pull in the
CBC signal.
CBC will not be allowed to solicit
local advertising in the CKNX-
CFPL coverage area because it’s
against CRTC policy to allow this
vhen there is no news or produc
tion bureau in the vicinity.
The public now has a choice
whether to watch the public <
network that CBC will become or
the alternative service of fully
independent stations.
The CFPL and CKNX sought
disaffiliation because they felt the
CBC carriage requirements re
stricted their need to produce and
show more locally oriented pro
gramming.
