Lori Appleby continues to set records Lori Appleby of RR 2, Blyth has had some very good finishes in some track and field meets recent­ ly- On April 13, Lori took part in the Madill Invitational. Schools from Huron, Perth and Bruce counties participated. In senior girls discus she set a new meet record and withathrowof31.97 and open girls shot put with aput of 11.90 while setting meet records in both events. On April 25 she competed at the Forest City track and field meet in CHSS team tunes up for H-P meet London. Lori put 10.90 to win the silver medal. On May 2, Lori participated at the Bluevale Relays held in Kitchener. Lori put the shot 10.64 m. to capture the gold medal. In discus she threw 33.84 to win the gold medal and break the school record. She also set meet records in both these events. Her next competition is May 6 and 7 for Huron-Perth held in Goderich. Lori is in grade 12 at F.E. Madill Secondary school in Wing­ ham. school record with a throw of 32.92 m. In senior girls shot she also seta new school and meet record with a put of 11:34 m. At this meet the Madill track and field team won the overall field performance award as well as the total track and field performance award. On April 23, Lori competed at the Medway Relays in Arva. His words of encouragement were always heard on the sidelines at the hockey games. Mike Chapman presented a plaque to Coach Joe Steffler who guided them to their first semi- finalists series since being organ­ ized. He always had the right words to say no matter what the occasion called for and the team appreciated his guiding hand on the bench. President Brian Hueth- Brussels Bullscoach Joe Steffler, centre, presented a special award to Club president Brian Heuther and his wife, Diane, at the team’s annual banquet and Awards Night at the BMG arena on Saturday, in recognition of the couple’s hard work throughout the year. In making the presentation, Mr. Steffler said that the Bulls had gone further this year than at any time since the Club was first formed. TheC.H.S.S. Track and Field team took part in the seventh Annual Tillsonburg Track and Field Meet last Wednesday. The competition involved over 40 high schools from Western Ontario and the competition was of a very high calibre with as many as 80 individuals in some of the events. In the Track portion of the event, er then presented Joe and Lynn Steffler with a wooden clock on behalf of executive and players for their hard work during the season. Neil McGavin closed the awards presentation with his usual good- natured commentary on a number of those present and was enjoyed by all. The doors closed at 11 p.m. to a full house who danced to Doug and Terry’s D.J. music. The Junior D Lottery draw still had some weekly $50 draws to be made and those winners were: Bev Ming Lee, running the 1500 m. steeple chase for the first time finished in fourth position with a time of 4 min. 52 sec. Steve Dolmage set a new school record in the Junior 110 m. hurdles finishing fifth with a 17.39 sec. time. Darryl Hemingway finished sixth in the MidgetlOOm. hurdles witha 16.04 sec. time. Williscraftof Clinton; John and Nicole Lowe, Brussels; Jeanne Kirkby, Walton; Kevin McArter, Brussels; Jim Garniss, Brussels. There were four $50 draws made at the dance and they were Mary Shean, Stratford; Lillian Hallam, Auburn; Mike Vincent, Londes- boro and Dave Harding, Gorrie. The big prize of $1,000 was won by Wes Albrecht of Atwood. Thankyoutoallwhopurchased tickets and helped make the draw a success. In the relay races, two excellent performances were recorded. The Midget Boys Mile Relay team composed of Steve Vandendool, Everett Ridder, Darryl Heming­ way and Derek Bradshaw finished in second position with a fine time of4min. lOsec.TheJuniorGirls4x 100 m. Relay, competing in the open event, placed a very impres­ sive third with a new school record time of 53.1 sec. A number of other good perfor­ mances were turned in as well. Steve Souch finished seventh in the Open Boys 3000 with a 9 min. 47.5 Brussels invites railway entrepreneur to council Brussels village council will invite Peter Bowers who dreams of taking over local railways if they are abandoned by Canadian National Railways to its June council meeting. Councillors made the decision after receiving information from Mr. Bowers’ organization Ontario Midwestern Rail Services and a request for a donation of $141.75 to help continue planning to make the rail takeover possible. CN rail recentlv lost an attempt, before the sec. time. Steve Vandendool had a personal best (P.B.) of 24.9 sec. in the 200 m. Dave Sparling also ran a P. B. of 25 sec. in that race. Greg Lobb ran a 10 min. 44 sec. 3000 m. Craig Bauman had a P. B. of 5.16 m. in the long jump, as did Steve Dolmage a5.63 m. and Everett Ridder at 5.11m. Kim Medd ran a 6 min. 31 sec. mile and was 10th in her heat. Angela Reid was 14th in the same heat. The Midget Boys 4 x 100 m. relay team composed of Craig Baumann, Darryl Heming­ way, Everett Ridder and Steve Vandendool just missed the school record at 49.65 sec. Canadian Transport Commission, to abandon the rail line through Brussels and other area rail lines but has reapplied for abandonment saying the line had only 127 carloads travel on it in 1986. Mr. Bower, from the Owen Sound area, following the plan of several regions in the U.S. and one in Alberta, would like to see a regional railway spring up from the giant CN’s plan to abandon local track.
