Brussels Public School students 'Pitch-in' “PITCH-IN” ‘87 CAMPAIGN by Danielle Cardiff On May 1 students from Brus­ sels Public School “pitched in’’ to clean up the town. The Kindergarten class cleaned up around the school yard, while grade 1 tidied up outside the Senior Citizens apartments. The B.M.G. pool was taken care of by the Grade 1-2 class, and the tennis court was tidied up by grade 3-4. Lions Park by grade 6-7. Last but not least grade 7-8 picked up the litter at the arena and the dam. The Ontario Federation of An­ glers and Hunters as well as Sunoco Inc., sponsored the clean up and provided the immense garbage bags. The children enjoyed the activity and one child was heard to say “I may never litter again!” Our apologies to any citizens who, unaware of our clean up campaign were alarmed or annoy­ ed when we attempted to pick up papers, etc. from your lawns. Our intentions were good! OPEN HOUSE by Jennifer Ricker and Donna Gordon On Wednesday, April 28, Brus­ sels Public School had an Open House. The JuniorChoirsang, “Puffthe Magic Dragon,” “Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead”, “We’re off to see the Wizard,” “Merry Old Land of Oz” and ‘‘Some Where over the Rainbow.” Mrs. Cousins Grade 4-5 class played “Clouds - Duet” on their recorders. Then there was a great performance from some of the grade8students, Patty Knight, Margaret Jarvis, Danny Beuer- mann, Todd Rice, Garry Yuill and Brian Me Arter. They did a gym­ nastic routine to the beat of “Lean on Me.” The Senior choir then sang “Pussy Willows, Cat-Tails’’, “Brand New Life,’’ “Where Everybody Knows Your Name’ ’ “Then Came You’’, “Without Us,” and “Flying Free.” The parents and guests had coffee and were able to look at their children’s work and classrooms. The students were pleased with the number of people there and with their response to the performan­ ces. BRUSSELS SCHOOL FIELD TRIP by Andy Overholt, Randy Beuermann and Brad Mulvey On Wednesday, Mrs. Emily Cousins and Mrs. Margery Hueth- er took grades four and five to the pump house to see the village water system. Mr. Dave Hastings from the P.U.C. was there to explain the details. The students all did projects when they came back. Some from the class drew a picture and wrote a paragraph about their field trip. Some of the town students showed how the water got to their houses. Most of the farm students drew pictures of the location of their wells. They explained tousiftheirwellwas dug by hand, or drilled. All had fun, and would like to thank Mr. Dave Hastings. TRIP TO TORONTO by David Johnston On Friday, April 24 the grade 7-8 class went on a trip to Toronto and Brampton. The day began at7a.m.when bus driver Doug Evans took them to Brampton and Mrs. Raymond directed him to Peel Regional Police Headquarters. Detective Murray Raymond gave a great tour at Peel Regional Headquarters. Detective Ray­ mond showed a video about the facilities at Peel Regional. AFter the video, Murray showed the students around the building where they saw computers, the communication room and the training centre. At approximately 10:45 a.m. the students departed from Peel Re­ gional and headed for the subway station on Dundas West street. There they got on the subway train and rode it to the St. George stop on Bloor street. They walked to the Royal Ontario Museum where they ate their lunches in the cafeteria. The students went next door to the McLaughlin Planetarium. They were shown a short film about the planetarium and saw a number of interesting displays. They then went into the immense domed theatre for a star show which posed the question “Is there life in our planetary system?” After the planetarium visit we had a directed lesson at the museum on the topic of dinosaurs. Following a short tour of the museum the students boarded their bus to be taken back to Brampton. They were allowed free timeand supper at “Shopper’s World”.
