Mrs. Johnston celebrates 80th Inthe afternoon of May 2, the family of Mrs. Gladys Johnston honoured their mother on her 80th birthday by holding a reception in the Blyth Legion Hall, at which Mrs. Johnston received 150 friends and relatives. Her eldest daughter, Doris, People Mr. and Mrs. Carl Longman and families attended the baptism of their grandson and nephew Jason Michael, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Longman, atthe Whiteoaks United Church, London on Sunday. Blyth folk are always not only glad but also relieved to see Mrs. Lila Radford back from Florida where she spends 5 - 6 months each year. Lila is always the last to return and her appearance assures us that warm weather has returned too. However, the below-normal temperatures we have been exper- iencing makes us feel she has fooled us regarding the weather thisyear, and perhaps, herself, too. Nevertheless, we are happy to have her among us for the next half year, and to see her enjoying her home, family and friends. Ladies ended up with the high scores for both men and women whenthe regular Monday night euchre party was held at Blyth Memorial Hall last week. Alice Buchanan and Mabel McAdam, playing as a man, had the top scores. Rita Wright and Graeme McDowell had the low scores. Vi Howes and Hazel Reid had the most lone hands. Bernice McClin- chey won the special prize. Time is winding down for the Wednesday night Lost Heir card parties. The last party will be held May 13. Last week seven tables were in play. High scores were recorded by Nora Kelly and Joe Holmes. Winnie Vincent and Shane Snell. Mrs. Myrtle Vodden, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Gowing, Mrs. Jean Cook of Blyth, Mrs. Mac Shaw of Brussels, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Turvey of RR 2, Bluevale, were guests at the Zapenski-Vodden wedding in Niagara Falls on April 25. Mrs. Mae Lake, of Clarkwood Nursing Home, Palmerston is visiting this week with her sister- in-law, Mrs. Myrtle Vodden. Kids performer pinned on the corsage, and granddaughter Robin Kendrick of London had made and decorated the attractive birthday cake which centred the buffet table and displayed the families’ wish - “Happy Eightieth Birthday!’’ Indeed, it was a happy one for Gladys, for her family also enter tained their mother at a full course turkey dinner at the Legion Hall at 6p.m. for which the Legion Ladies ’ Auxiliary catered. The 38 who enjoyed the meal included 13 grandchildren, nine great-grand children and Gladys’s own family and their spouses: Don Johnston and Charlotte of Centralia; Doris and Bob Bulmer of London; Bernice and Gordon Shortt of Shelburne; andElaine Alblasof Huron Park. Don Johnston spoke words of praise for his mother’s kindnesses through the years, and Gordon Shortt proposed a toast. Gladys’s reply conveyed her appreciation for all her family had done to make her 80th birthday such a delightful occasion. Among the many lovely gifts Mrs. Johnston received were a microwaveovenand abeautiful clock from her family; and a mantel chime clock from her grandchild ren. On the evening of May 5, Gladys Johnston was the guest of honour at the home of her brother Russell and Marion Cook. The Cook’s gather each year for a social time to celebrate birthdays of sisters and brothers. This year was special. They were celebrating the 80th birthday of the eldest in the Cook family - Mrs. Gladys Johnston.
