From the Minister's Study THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, 1987. PAGE 21. Studying the verses of 'The Great Commission BY REV. BOB BARNHART CO-PASTOR BL YTH CHURCH OF GOD “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Mt. 28: 18 20). These verses are commonly referred to as the “Great Commis sion." Jesus gave this to his disciples shortly before he ascend ed into heaven. I want to look at three important concepts of the Great Commission. The first is "go and make disciples. ’ ’ Too often in the church we stress getting people saved and don’t emphasize the importance of nurture. Suppose for a minute that my wife and I wanted to have a baby. After getting pregnant we went to the doctor regularly, watched what she ate, took classes together, and read books on childbirth. Then came the day we rushed to the hospital and she delivered a 6 lb., 8 oz. baby boy. Suppose we said: "Now that the baby is born our work is done.” What would you think. You would probably think we were crazy and you would be right. Our work was only beginning. Yet we do this many times in the church. We get someone saved and think our job is done. WRONG! We need to nurture and care for them like we would a new born baby. A disciple is someone who has been nurtured and has grown in the Christian faith. The second conceptis "make disciples of all nations." Each culture is important in God’s economy. Revelation4:9 says, ”... you purchased men for God from ev'ery tribe and language and people and nation. A phrase that people have used is “they are not our kind of people.” We tend to go to two extremes. We exclude people by saying these are not our kind of people. Or, we try to include them by making them like us. The principles in the Bible can apply to every culture, tribe, or language, without destroying their culture. The third concept is “teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you”. This is how we nurture them. By teaching them the principles of the Bible. Teach ing them principles is what is important. Too often we get hung up on do’s and don’ts rather than principles. We need to teach them principles, values so that they can make their own decisions. Parents need to teach their children principles so that when they grow up they can make their own decisions. The same is true of Christians. We need to teach them principles. If all we teach them are do’s and don’ts they can run into problems when they face a situa tion that isn’t covered by the do’s and don’ts. Jesus concludes the Great Com mission by giving us a promise. The promise is he will be with us always. Praise the Lord!
