Sports Paul Yanchus of Blyth is one of the dedicated and lucky fishermen in the area who took advantage of the opening of the inland waters trout season last Friday to put fresh fish on the table. An avid fisherman, Mr. Yanchus won’t disclose where he got these two beauties, other than it was “in Blyth Creek.” Family pets Snow and Peter are willing to help with the filleting of the pair of 101b. Rainbows. Vivienne Stephens sets school records in London track meet A small contingent of the C.H.S.S. Track and Field team took partf or the first time in the Forest City Prep Invitational held in London last Saturday. This is the iOthrunningoftheeventand some 67 schools from all over western Ontario were in attendance with over 1400 competitors taking part and as many as 80 competitors in many of the events. Central Huron’s competitors did a fine job considering the level of competi tion. The most outstanding perform ance for the Redmen was turned in by Vivienne Stephens who became the first female in the history of Central Huron to break the 13 second barrier in the 100 m. running a 12.9 sec. clocking and finishing third out of 82 competi CHSS has best ever results at Medway relays CHSS girls soccer team wins first game BY LISA BOONSTOPPEL Showing dominating speed and uncomparable skill, the girls’ soccer team from Central Huron Secondary School (C.H.S.S.) blew away the competition with a heavy score of 1-0. The game held at Norwell was a stunning success for the girls’ team that surprised loyal fans and the team members alike. You see, lastyear’s season was a dismal failure for the C.H.S.S. girls who never managed to win a game and incredibly, never scored a goal. The newness of the team contributed to that unfortunate state of affairs. Last year was the first year in the history of C.H.S.S. that a girls’ soccer team was developed. The girls were eager, exuberant, energetic and deter mined but an extreme lack of experience rendered the team incapable of action in the face of experienced and knowledgeable competition. Many taunts, discriminatory remarks and scornful comments were directed against the girls valiant efforts by the C.H.S.S. boys. Needless to say, these untasteful comments only deepen ed the girls’ feelings of depression. As this year’s team began, the girls became angered at the snide remarks they received from the boys. Filled with incredible deter mination and a strong feeling of “we’ll show them’’ the girls knew they could win and they did. The team consists of 26 players varying in age from M- 19. The game which was held on Thursday, April 23 is only the beginning of a flourishing strength and skill in the girls playing. Speaking from experience as I was a member of last year’steam, 1 can’t express the utter elation at this stunning victory. Even if we never score again I will treasure this day forever. The goal scored by Jen Jewitt of Clinton will be emblazoned in my eyes forever as a tremendous tribute to the deter mination and co-operation within the girls’ soccer team. I have to add this final note to complete my fulfillment. You see the boys have played their first two games too. Their scores were 2-0 and 3-2, they lost both. Ha, Ha!! I BY K. ALLEN Last Thursday, the C.H.S.S. Track and Field team took part in the 35th Annual Medway Relays in Arva with some 21 schools in attendance from the Huron-Perth and London Conferences. The competition, particularly on the track was of a very good quality. All of the track events at Medway take the form of medlay relays. Prior to this event the best showing Central Huron had ever recorded was a fifth place finish in a relay. However, due to the fact that this year’s track team is the best ever, that would change. The Midget Boys won the gold medal lion in the 1/2 mi. relay. The team composed of Everett Ridder, Craig Bauman, Derek Bradshaw and Steve Vandendool won the event in a time of 1 min. and 50 sec. The Junior Girls 1/2 mile relay finished a strong fourth with a good timeof2min.6.2sec. The team was composed of Karen Uyl, Julie Trick, Alison Jeacock and Susan Govenlock.
