Brussels ratepayers get answers at meeting Continued from page 1 fielded more than two hours of questions from the floor on various aspects of their jobs. Brussels village councillors Malcolm Jacobs and Gordon Workman were absent, a fact com mented on by several of the rate payers present. In answer to a direct question, Brussels Reeve Hank Ten Pas said he was some what surprised by their absence, since the meeting had been planned well in advance, and had been approved by all members of coun cil. Village clerk-treasurer Hugh Hanly chaired the meeting, and he had his assistant Donna White answer questions from the audience regarding village admin istration, while Reeve Ten Pas handled the majority of questions directed to council as a whole, as well as giving an account of his involvement on county council and as representative to the Huronview board of directors. The reeve also gave a report of the activities of the Road Committee, in the absence of committee chairman Gordon Workman, with input from coun cillor Betty Graber, who also spoke on behalf of the village’s recreation committee. Councillor Neil MacDonald commented on the Brussels Fire Brigade, and handled enquiries to the village’s property committee; while P.U.C. employees Harold Bridge and Henry Exel fielded a barrage of questions on water and hydro rates, a major area of con cern. Max Oldfield, representative to the Wingham Hospital Board spoke briefly, with input from former representative Nancy Exel, while Maitland Valley Conserva tion Authority representative Bruce McCall commented at length of the MVCA’s extensive role in local community better- ment. Although questions and com ments from the ratepayers in at- tendance touched on each of these areas, the greatest amount of in terest was generated by Keith Mul vey's lively account of the present activities and future plans of the Brussels, Morris and Grey Indus trial Committee which meets regu larly with the intention of attracting new industry to the area. Mr. Mulvey, who represents Brussels on the committee along with Morris deputy reeve Clem McLellan and Grey councillor Leona Armstrong, said that any ideas from the general public would be welcomed by the committee. “If any of you know of anyone who wants to invest money in a Brussels building, or who wants to start an industry in town, let us know and we will help out in any way we can. We are easy to get along with" he said. He told of plans the committee has of promoting the village by means of a video tape scheduled for production in early May, and a- greed with Reeve Ten Pas that Brussels urgently needs to attract small, light industry in order to capitalize on the building and pop ulation boom which has taken place over the past year or so. “I think you’ll see a lot of industry coming to Brussels within the next year and a half. We are certainly going to give it our best shot,’’ he promised.
