I®HEART AND STROKE FOUNDATION OF ONTARIO Brussels mill engine restored for homecoming The engine of the old mill at the Brussels dam is being restored by local expert Howard Bernard, and will hopefully be ready for display by the time of Brussels 115th birthday party and home- coming celebration in early July, according to Maitland Valley Conservation Authority repre sentative Bruce McCall, who spoke at the Brussels ratepayers* meeting last week. Mr. McCall is vice chairman of the MVCA, as well as Brussels’ representative to the authority. Mr. McCall said that the mill will be open during the celebration, which is expected to attract thou sands of visitors to the area. He added that the MVCA, which ad ministers the Brussels Conserva tion Authority where the dam and mill are located, eventually hopes to have the attraction open on a regular basis, but noted that “this takes money.” He calculates that the Authority has to date spent $410,000 on the Brussels C.A.’ “In time, we hope that the old mill will be a place of greater interest, one which will attract people to Brussels,” he said. “It could even become a satelite for the Huron County Museum, used to display antiques which could be changed from time to time to keep up interest” He noted that once a park is established, people will come to the area to use it, with spin offbenefits to the local community. Calling Brussels the “cleanest town in the area,” Mr. McCall said that relations between the village and the MVCA had always been excellent, and admitted that he was at a loss to understand how a council such as Brussels’ could have any problems. Mr. McCall also expressed his gratitude to the Brussels Horticul tural Society for the excellent job they have done in planting and maintaining the gardens at the riverside park. Ethel 4-H dub holds meeting BY TAMMY COOK The members of Ethel I “Stylish Survivors’’, met at the Ethel United Church on April 4 to show off their cleaning skills. They divided up the jobs of vacuuming, cleaning windows, sweeping and general cleaning. After they finish ed the church they settled down for doughnuts and juice. On April 6, they met at Beth Earl’s house for a lesson in transportation. They learned many ways of transportation and things that affect the choice of travel. They found out about the many costs involved in owning a car. The girls then split into groups and learned how to change a car tire, check oil, tire pressure, water level in the radiator, check and boost a battery. On a bike, they learned to tighten a chain, check tire pressure, grease a bike, change wheel, adjust the seat, check the brakes and how to change the spokes.
