Brussels strong building boom continuing Construction continues at a strong pace in Brussels as Brussels council approved building permits for three new homes at its meeting Wednesday night. Murray Long was given a permit for construction of a one-story house on Queen St., and Gordon Rutledge received a permit for a house on Mechanic St. as well as getting a demolition permit to remove an old barn on the property. There was more contro versy about a permit to Betty Campbell for a house on Queen St. as council worried about how close two houses would be to each other. Provisional approval was given to the permit as long as the proper distance between the new house and its neighbour was maintained. ***** Council is considering a new building permit rate to prevent people from getting away with paying a smaller fee than they should by underestimating the cost of construction. The plan, if adopted, would put a minimum construction cost of $40 a square foot on a building and the regular fee rate of $10 for the first $1,000 of construction cost and $4 for each additional $1,000 would then apply. Various other mini mum fees are also under discus sion. the improvements in Ethel at considerable cost.***** Council approved drain im provements on George St. in the industrial park near the new Huron Feeding Systems plant. Grey township has offered to gravel Burgess St. which extends into the township.***** Mrs. Jean Workman has agreed to rent the village a 10-foot strip of landatacostof $1 for 21 years if needed to complete a second roadway entrance to the Brussels, Morris and Grey community cen tre. Parts for the type of street light used in Brussels are hard to get. The offer is conditional on Grey township going ahead with OPP praise Block Parents Continued from page 1 Parents, he said, but nothing had come of it. Councillor Malcolm Jacobs brought up the problem of delivery trucks double-parking on main street. He had been called by a parent just before the meeting about a child nearly getting run over because of a truck double- parked at noon-hour. Sgt. McKee said if there were specific com plaints of this nature he could arrange to have a patrol car visit the village at noonhour and issue warnings, and if necessary tickets to truckers who don’t use rear alleys where they are available. Sgt. McKee, after a question from Councillor Neil McDonald, discussed the problem of policing of dances, saying that policing of special occasion permits is the responsibility of the people spon soring the event. Police hesitate to go into dances, he said. He suggested it might be a good idea to hold a meeting such as one held in Blyth recently in which police, representatives of the Liquor Licensing Board and the village’s lawyer had talked to sponsoring groups about what is involvedlegallyinsponsoring a licenced event.
