Entertainment Blyth Church wins award Pomp Boys and Dinettes, a lively musical abont two ririer* who ran a dtaer in the southern U.S. and their neighbours, four boys who run agarage had toes tapping at Memorial Hall Sunday. It also showed just how well the Blyth Festival’s own musical productions stack up against competition. The Sunday School at the Church of God, McConnell Street, has been recognized for significant growth in attendance this past year. Recently the Sunday School received the Sunday School Growth Award from the national offices of the Church of God in Anderson, Indiana. This Sunday School is one of 400 schools which have been recognized for achiev ing a growth pattern of 10 per cent or more during the past 12 months. The Blyth Sunday School rate of increase was 100 per cent. The award is part of a national 10-year program aimed at strengthening theimpactofthe Sunday School upon church and community life. When asked to whom or to what the credit went for such an increase, the Blyth congregation all agreed it was God at work in human affairs, people praying, and responding to God’s leading. “It was all God’s doing,’’ they said. Pastors Bob and Cecile Barn hart, and Superintendent John Steckle extend a warm and friendly welcome to children and adults alike to meet with them on Sunday mornings at 10 o’clock, at the Church of God Sunday School. The show originated in New York, and this production owes its life to the Charlottetown Festival and The Variety Theatre in Toronto and there are certainly many good things to be said for it. The performances were excel lent from a talented and likeable cast. With Robert Mciag as a Tom Selleck-look-alike as Jim and Jodie Riesen and Janet MacEwan as the Cupp sisters there was plenty of wholesome sex appeal to either gender. The music was toe-tapp ing and well performed, (although as is so often the case when touring groups visit the intimate Memorial Hall it was so over-amplified it drove some senior citizens from their seats and made it hard to hear the words of the songs). The show brings a string of rave reviews, and awards with it. The production won four Dora Awards including best production in Tor onto. It was nominated for a Tony, New York’s top theatre award. And yet... for this one viewer anyway, thoughts kept coming back while listening to the country and western music to the Festival’s own production of the Ted Johns/ John Roby collaboration of “Coun try Hearts’’. The comparisons were not complimentary to Pump Boys and Dinettes. Expectations may have played partofthe problem. Pump Boys and Dinettes is supposed to be a piece of theatre but it’s really little more than concert with an elabor ate theatrical set. The 21 lively musical numbers are strung to gether with a bit of patter to try to give them an excuse to be there. There’s no chance to see the characters develop, no chance to get involved in their lives and care about them as in a musical like Country Hearts. It seems like a throwback to the musicals of the 1920’s and ‘30’s when producers brought good songs from various composers and created a show around them. It’s not to say the audience didn’t have a good time because most people seemed to enjoy the lively production. It’s just a little like eating candy floss in comparison to a superb full-course meal. It’s enough to really have one looking forward to another season of the Festival and more John Roby music in “The Girls in the Gang.” for Earl & Marg Caldwell fortheir 50th Anniversary Saturday, April 11 2-4p.m.&7-9p.m. at their home on Queen Street Blyth Best Wishes Only THURS., FRI., SAT 5P.M.-12A.M.
