Bulls fight off elimination in overtime
Protecting their goalie in the second period of Sunday’s hockey game in Brussels, the Bulls present a solid
wall of opposition to the invading Lucan Irish. The Bulls went on to take an overtime win of 6-4, in the
best-of-seven playoff series. The final game will go in Brussels on Thursday unless the Irish take the series
at Lucan on Tuesday.
the score, with the remainder ofthe
period being scoreless.
The second period found the
Bulls there in body but not in spirit
as Lucan scored three unanswered
goals to take a sound 4-1 lead at the
end of forty minutes of play.
Brussels has been a third period
team a great many times this
season and this game was no
exception. The team seemed to
find their legs and made a strong
comeback. After five minutes of
play Marty Rutledge assisted by
Tim Fritz scored the first goal of the
period. It took another seven
minutes of play before Rob Cardiff
got his second goal of the game
assisted by Mike Chapman and
Paul Robinson to bring the score
4-3. Once more Lucan scored a goal
in a minute’s time to dampen
Brussels spirits. Play continued
until 5:17 when Kevin Me Arter
scored from Paul Edwards and
Marty Rutledge to come within one
goal once more.
The Bulls continued the last five
minutes of play but just couldn’t
beat the goalie. Lucan then
claimed the 5-4 victory. Someone
neglected to check their 50-50
ticket and the jackpot of $416 was
not claimed.
FULLHOUSE SUNDAY
The stage was set for game five
in Brussels on Sunday afternoon. A
good spectator turnout was in
evidence and as the players
stepped on the ice for a 2p.m. start,
they were playing before a full
house.
Once more Lucan took advant
age of the first minute of play and
scored within a matter of 34
seconds. They added to that lead at
15:21 on a power play effort to take
’a 2-0 lead.
The Bulls rebounded with 3:33
remaining as Marty Rutledge
scored from Tim Fritz and Blake
Flett on a power play effort.
Tim Fritz added the second goal
in less than a minute on passes
from Rutledge and Flett in another
power play attempt.
Lucan returned the favor with
just 45 seconds left in the period as
they scored on a power play effort
as well, to go ahead by one at the
end of the period.
The teams had played almost 11
minutes of the second period
before Marty Rutledge scored
from Mike Chapman and Paul
Robinson to even the score for
Brussels. Tough end-to-end action
continued until there was 4:37
remaining and Bill Haines beat the
goalie on a pass from Rob Cardiff

The Brussels Bulls were at home
to the Lucan Irish on Tuesday night
for the third game of their
semi-final series with each team
holding a victory.
The game proved to be another
60 minutes of pressure-packed
action. The visitors succeeded in
tying up the top goal scorers and
keeping them off the scoreboard.
There was only 4:54 remaining
in the first period when Lucan
finally beat the goalie to take a 1-0
lead in the game.
The second period had Lucan
scoring just 58 seconds into the

finally got on the scoreboard after
six-and-a-half minutes of play to
make the score 2-1.
The remainder of the period was
scoreless as the teams protected
their goalies well. Lucan had nine
