Spring Thankoffering Service was held in the auditorium of Duff’s United Church. Guests were pre­ sent from surrounding churches. Ushers were Olene Dennis, Maxine Marks, Dianne McCallum and Kathleen Williamson. The U.C.W. President welcom: ed everyone and called on Marie McGavin who introduced the special guests, who are from Alma College, St. Thomas. Along with her daughter Heather there was Lillian, Michelle, Crystal and their religious instructor Ms. Scott. These guests conducted the brief devotional service each girl telling different happenings at Alma. “Fairest Lord Jesus” was sung accompanied by Margery Huether at the organ. Ms. Scott showed interesting slides on Alma, giving worthwhile facts about the 110 year old building and what went on at Alma College. The offering was received and dedicated. Helen Craig presented courtesy remarks to the girls and Ms. Scott for sharing their time and know­ ledge. Ms. Scott accompanied with her guitar for the closing hymn, “Lord of the Dance”, followed by prayer. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8, 1987. PAGE 9. Dave and Pat Booth of Gorrie examine a pair of brass engravings, once used as printing plates in the old Brussels Post. The couple were among the many people who attended the opening weekend of the new Cornerstone Flea Market in Brussels, which occupies the premises of the early newspaper.People around Walton Mr. and Mrs. Ian Wilbee visited for a few days last week with Mr. and Mrs. Ken Wilbee, Napanee. Isabelle Shortreed spent a cou­ ple of days recently with Bill and Louise Smith in Mitchell. April is Cancer month. Just a reminder a canvasser will be calling on those in the village. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Craig were in Bolton last Thursday to attend thefuneral of their aunt. Mrs. Wes McCutcheon. Mrs. Larry (Dena) Kale and children, Carla and Cameron of Edmonton, Albert are visiting with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Camp­ bell Wey, calling on Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Reid on Saturday. Congratulations to Bill and Valerie Shortreed on their new baby girl born in Clinton Hospital last Friday. Valerie and baby are at Westminster Campus in London at the time of writing. We hope they will be well to return home real soon. The W.I. meeting next week, April 15 will be the annual meeting when members plan to go to the Golden Lantern Restaurant, Brus­ sels for their supper. 4-H club meets BY HEATHER BAAN The sixth and final meeting of the 4-H club, “Handy Dandy’s” was held at the home of Mary Baan on March 31. After the opening 4-H pledge the roll call “Where would you like to go for a holiday? ’ ’ was answered by all members. The different types of transportation were discussed in­ cluding talking about the car and cost involved. A demonstration was given on how to check the oil, how to boost a battery, how to change a tire and how to check the lights. Achievement program was an­ nounced to be held on May 7 at Londesboro. We're Back Early Huron Homemakers to hear Social Services minister At the regular meeting of the Town and Country Homemakers (T.C.H.) held at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food office in Clinton on March 25th - it was announced Bev Brown was hired as co-ordinator for the Home Support Program of Town and Country Homemakers. Her office will be in the Homemakers’ building on Victoria Street in Wingham. This new position was created because of the tremendous in­ crease in business for T.C.H. as a result of the New Integrated Program. Plans were made for the Board of Directors to be in attendance at Ellison’sTravelShow in Clinton on April 2. Proceeds of the travel show are to be donated to Town and Country Homemakers. Jean Young executive director reported that the 1986 fund raising campaign that started last fall and extended into the new year netted just over $13,000. The board of directors would like to thank all donors and the businesses who bought ads on the placemats which were distributed throughout the county at the beginning of the campaign. Helen Underwood and her com­ mittee announced final plans for the Annual Meeting and Banquet tobe held in Holmesville, Tuesday, April 14. Joe Cordiano M.P.P., assistant to Minister of Community and Social Services, will be the guest speaker. Door prizes will be offered.
