We are within a few weeks of An that will have
far-reaching conaegoences, and the electors of North Huron
have a right to know where the candidates stand in their re-
lation to piddle questions. It will be impossible for me to
meet all the eleetors in person. or to addrem meetings in
every part of the riding: so ,T shall use the public press to
present my views on the mit'itanding issues of the eampaign.
' We all reeognite that North Huron is a rural riding.
But it is more that: that. It is an eminently progressive rural
riding. Its twople 'have sprrig from some of the best stock
that evir came into th.is country. and the general level of in-
telligene*C. imbistry. enterprise and thrift is ontstahtlinlY
high. It is no wonder. then. that when. a few- years ago. the
farmers' ninVement swept over the rrovince this eotinty.
and partieularly riding. took a prominent part in 'She
uprising that so prfountlly affected. and 'to this day af-
fects!. the buqiiess and politival life of Canada. On the busi-
ness sitb. thal movemcnt brought the farmers together in
en -operative -effort. On the political side it drew attention
sharply to the problems in whielt farmers are most immed-
iately mincer:led. it led to a more independent view of pi:Uti-
ca] parties and politieal issues. and it took a lot of the
"bunk" out of polities.
The influences of that moVeMent are Mill with Us, and
there is no reasnin why they should not be permanent. The
people of North Huron have a right to examine politieal
issues as they see them in relation to their own interests.
The politicianswre all ready to admit that agriculture is
Canada's greatest industry: but some of them "Tent to think
that beeause it is Canada's greatest industry it ought .to
earry all the others on its shoulders without- eomplaint or
protest. There is n limit. however. to what it can beer -
and thtitlimit was long since reached. So far as the people of '
North Huron are eoneerned (and in this phrase should he •

Whose interests are bound up with those of the farms that
surround them), they have ,the right to see that their influ-
*nee in the Parliament of Canada is exerted in the direction
of the betterment of eonditiona affecting their industry -of
the rednetion of taxation and of the eosts of production -of
the Aiseovery of new markets and the expansion of exiating
markets for their goods -and generally of doing those things
that governments can do for the welfare of the industry
which provides' a livelihood for so large a proportion of the
people of this county and of this Dominion.
In this and the following letters I propose to discuss
from this standpoint the isanes of the election that is now
upon 1111. '
Let us consider first the British preferenee, for it is not
unlikely that in years to come this will he the issue that will
stand out most dearly in conneetion with this eleetion
