Bru ssel s Bulls goalie Jeff McGavin makes a successful grab at the puck during the end-to-end action in the first period of the first game of the O.H.A. semi-final series against the Lucan Irish on March 25. Fan support at both home and away games has been excellent as the Bulls battle their way through the playoffs, with standing room only at most of the games. The Bulls meet Lucan in the fifth game of the series in Brussels at 2 p.m. Sunday. Me Arter scores hat trick as Bull's series tied BYLOISMcARTER Brussels Bulls were at home to the Lucan Irish for the first game of the O.H.A. semi-final series. Wow, it’s exciting hockey and I’m not sure how much of this heart-stopping action the old system can stand. The first period was good end-to-end action and the final score did not indicate the first period of play. It was the goalie’s period with Brussels getting the only goal. There were 3:05 remain ing whenTim Fritz scored on a pass from defenceman Paul Edwards to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead. The second period had the Irish come out and score at 1:15 to tie the score. There was 14:06 on the clock when forwards Marty Rutledge and Mike Chapman passed the puck back to defenceman Doug Taylor who beat the goalie on a power play effort to give Brussels the lead again. Lucan came back with 5:12 on the clock to score and then added a power play goal at 1:53 to take a 3-2 lead at the end of the second period. The third period had Lucan score two minut es into the period to take a 4-2 lead It was 16:10 when the Bull’s Brian Campbell scored from Kevin Johnston and Kevin Ruttan to come within one of the visitors. But, as sometimes happens, Lucan came back with a quick goal in just a minute’s time to go ahead by two once more. Fast action continued until there was just 2:55 left when Kevin McArter scored to beat the goalie on a pass from Paul Edwards and come within one again. In a matter of 19 seconds Kevin sedred his second goal on a pass from Rob Cardiff to tie the score. The remainder of the period was scoreless forcing an overtime period. The clock was set for 10 minutes and after a brief breather the two teams resumed the same good hockey action with both goalies performing well. There was 4:15 left when persistence paid off for Mike Vincent as he picked up the puck in a scramble around the net to beat the goalie with assists going to Todd Hutton and Dave Harding. Kevin McArter completed his hat-trick just 16 seconds later on a pass from Rob Cardiff and Kevin Lee to give Brussels the 7-5 lead. The remainder of the period was scoreless giving Brussels the first victory of the series. Doug Taylor of Lucan held the lucky ticket for the 50-50 draw claiming the $200 pot. The Bulls returned to Lucan on Saturday night for the second game of the series. Lucan was assessed a roughing penalty just 17 seconds into the game but it didn’t stop them from scoring a short-handed goal a minute and 45 seconds into the period. It was 11:59 before Brus sels managed to get on the scoreboard with Rob Cardiff scor ing on a pass from Kevin Lee and Bill Haines. There was just 2:59 left in the period when Tim Fritz scored on a pass from Mike Chapman and Marty Rutledge. The remainder of the period was scoreless with the Bulls holding a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period. A let down by the team in the second period resulted in a bom bardment of goals by the Irish. They scoredfour goals between 13:23 and 5:29 and then the Blyth Tykes Continued from Page 13 andcontinuedon, orwhatabout the father who hunted high and low for his son’s other shin pad only to have it pointed out he had put two on one leg... and then you have the other side of the coin. The remainder of the period was scoreless. It looked like the Bulls were on a sound come-back trail when Kevin McArter scored just 27 seconds into the third period on a pass from Rob Cardiff and Blake Flett, for a short-handed goal to bring the score within one. But Lucan never let up and came back with another goal in 54 seconds.$ Play continued until 8:56 when Todd Hutton assisted by Blake end season ment telling his son, “If you don’t win this game you’re grounded for six weeks.’’ Can youbelieve it? Maybe it is just as well Hensall won thisgame, assix weeks is along time with baseball season almost upon us. Flett and Kevin Johnston scored for the Bulls. Lucan retaliated once more with a quick goal at 7:29. With the score. 8 to 6 for Lucan, coach Steffler pulled the goalie for the extra attacker but Lucan scored an empty net goal with just 29 secondsremaining, putting the game out of reach for the Bulls. The luckiest person at the game was John Steffler of Walton who came home with the 50-50 draw winnings of $300. The two teams will be playing T CUp"n save"." CLIP’S SAVE...
