The couple have sold the frozen food portion of their business and hope to sell their juice franchise soon so they can enjoy more time in their new home in Benmiller. Biyth landmark dosing THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1, 1987. PAGE 3. One of the landmarks of Biyth will close this week when the lunch bar at Wallace Turkey Products at the north end of the village on Highway 4 will close as part of the retirement plans of Piet and Ann Reinsma, owners of the company since 1964. The Reinsmas have sold the frozen food portion of their busines to Flannigan Sales and Distribu tion Ltd. of Kitchener, another frozen food distributor. For the time being the Holiday juice franchise will continue to work out of the present building until a buyer is found. The company was too big for a small owner and too small for a big company to buy, Mr. Reinsma said, so they decided to break it into more manageable portions for sale. The company had more than $1 million in sales last year and employed six persons. The Reinsmas took over the operation in 1964 from Robert Wallace who had founded it. Piet came to Canada from the Nether lands in 1953 and worked for General Coach, a trailer manufac turer in Hensall for seven years. He married Ann van den Assem in 1954. In 1960 Piet went to work for Mr. Wallace. He got a raise from $50 a weekto$55and “Ithoughtlhad the world by the tail”, he recalls. Four years later they purchased the business and Mr. Wallace went to work for them instead. He died at Christmas in 1974 in an accident. After the Reinsmas took over the operation, extra lines were added to the turkey products as it became a supplier of frozen foods and ice cream to restaurants and institu tions. The closing of this side of the operation may bean inconvenience to local restaurants who were able to call up and get emergency supplies if they ran out, Ann Reinsma says. Thecompanylater obtained a franchise for the Holiday Juice and supplied it around the area. In 1976 the company stopped its killing operations and the space was turned instead to freezer and cooler use. Nowthe couple, who recently moved to Benmiller when their son took over their poultry farm north of Clinton are looking forward to enjoying more time for them selves. “What is money any good for ifyou have not time to spend it,” Piet says. Ann, who has overseen the restaurant operation over the years says she has enjoyed the work and getting to know so Continued on page 26 People Mr. and Mrs. Herb Shannon.
