Blyth Novices win consolation trophy at Teeswater Continued from Page 11 W.O.A.A. novice grand cham pionship tournament to be held in Clifford on Saturday, March 28. TEESWATER TOURNAMENT The Blyth Novices participated in the Teeswater Lions Novice Tournament last Saturday. The huge let down after the Seaforth playoff series and the fatigue from a long season showed as the team struggled all day long. They met Mildmay in their opening game with Mildmay winn ing 2-0 as the Blyth Novices were shut out for the first time this season. Mildmay opened the scoring with 19 seconds left in the first period and added an insurance put the Brussels fans on edge. Intermediate round-up In WOAA Intermediate hockey action the divisional champions have been decided and the winners now advance to the grand cham pionship. In int. “A” Durham swept Teeswater in four straight by scores of 7-2, 5-4, 7-5 and 7-2. In Int. “B” Wellesley ousted the local Crusaders in five games. Brussels lost the first game 7-6, won game two9-4, then wereswept aside by scores of 7-1,4-3 (OT) and 5-3. In Int. “C” Lions Head repeated as divisional champions with a three game sweep of Monkton by marker midway through the third as Blyth’s offence sputtered. This loss sent Blyth into the consolation round where they met Brussels in their next game. Once again Blyth struggled to find their game although in this game they provided enough firepower to handily outscore Brussels by a 6-2 score. Brussels opened the scoring before Blyth tied the game with time running out in the first period. Benjie Hakkers scored on a backhand shot as he was set up by Scott Arthur and Brian McNichol. Blyth scored the first three goals of the second period to take a commanding lead in the game and scores of 6-3,5-4 (OT) and5-4 (OT). In Int. “D” Ripley claimed their fourth consecutive championship. Taking a three game lead by scores of 2-1, 10-4, and 12-3 against Drayton, their only set back was a 7-6 loss in game four. They wrapped up the series in game five by a 7-4 score. Durham, who had the best regular schedule record of the four winners was awarded their choice of opponent for a semi-final series. They chose Ripley leaving Lions HeadandWellesleytomeetina second series. The two winners meetforthe 1987 WOAA Grand Championship. Henry Bos counted the go ahead marker as he was set up in front of thenetonabackhandpassfrom Ryan Chamney. RyanChamney then scored on a backhand shot with Henry Bos assisting on the goal. Shawn Hakkers then set up Brian McNichol along the left wing boards. Brian cut to the net and stuffed his own rebound past the Brussels' goalie. Brusselsgotalate second period goal to send the teams into the third with Blvth holding a 4-2 lead. Blyth added two more unan swered goals in the third. A nice passing play from Jason Rutledge Brussels Sprouts beat Wingham Last Satuday the Brussels Sprouts (bolstered by three Pre Novice players) travelled to Wing ham to play their last game of the season. They came away with a 5-4 win against the Wingham pre novice. Trevor Wilson got two goals and one assist and Andrew Exel one goal and one assist. Scott Clarkson and Corey Campbell each got one goal with Mike Cooper getting one assist. Along with Matthew Short reed, Korey Bray, Kevin Mutter and Corey Newman the boys played a good game of hockey. It was an evenly matched game that went down to the wire as Blyth scored a late goal to win the championship trophy witha2-l win. Blyth opened the scoring midway through the first period on a goal by Brian McNichol. Blyth didn’t give Lucknow ano ther offensive chance as they held on for the victory. An overjoyed team of boys collected their winning trophy and pennants to end a very exhausting day on the ice. This Wednesday evening, March 25, the Blyth Novices are hosting a mother/father and son game. Novices end season Brussels Novices went to the Teeswater Novice Tournament March 21. Their first game against Ripley was a fast-paced and hard-skated game. They were defeated 4-2 with Trevor Machan getting the first goal and Randy Beuermann gett ing the second goal, assisted by Brad Mulvey and Trevor Machan. Moving to the consolation round, they met Blyth. Trevor Machan scored the first goal of the game unassisted with the first period ending 1 -1. Blyth scored three quick goals in the second period with Brad Mulvey scoring unassisted for Brussels. Final score was 6-2 for Blyth. The Novices showed a notice able improvement through the season. Team members included: Randy Beuermann, Geoff Dalton, Micheal Dauphin, Jeff Elliott, Grant Jarvis, Dave Lewington, Jeff Lewington, Trevor Machan, Brad Mulvey, Shawn Nicholson, Andy Overholt, Tommy Pearson, Jamie Smith, Darryl Van Ness, Shane Wilson and Coaches Dave Bender and Gary Dauphin. Two minutes remaining in the first period Michael Haggitt scored the third goal assisted by Jeff Cowan. In the second period Mark “Sparky” Wilson scored the next two goals assisted both times by Jeff Cowan. Zurich scored their first goal moments later. Greg Blok and Michael Haggitt assisted Jason Badley who scored the sixth goal of the game. Three and a half minutes remaining Zurich scored again. A few minutes into the third period, Mark ‘‘Sparky” Wilson shot and scored assisted by Darryl Bromley and Jeff Ferguson. Mi chael Haggitt scored the last goal of the game assisted by Ronnie Abel-Rinn. The final score was 8-2 for Blyth. Zurich received silver medal lions -nd Blyth players were given gold medallions depicting a hockey player and the words ‘‘Minor Hockey”.
