Not I, but Christ must live in me
BY REV. CHARLES
CARPENTIER
BRUSSELS & ETHEL
UNITED CHURCHES
This is the season of Lent, and
Lent found its model in the 40-day
enforced retreat of Christ beyond
theriver Jordan. Lent is not simply
a matter of almsgiving, prayer and
fasting, but it is a season of 40-days
in which we reflect our relationship
we have with God through Christ.
But for far too many of us, Lent is
confined tothe worship experience
we have on Sunday, and the
40-days of Lent are, for many,
literally lost. Obviously something
has gone wrong.
Let us imagine that God has
called us together to play a game.
He is in the centre. We ought to
bestanding in a large circle, linked
together by the joining of hands,
and facing toward the central
figure. But see what we have done.
We have turned away from God.
Therefore, instead of playing
God’s game we are bent inward
upon ourselves like the perverse
children Jesus saw in the market
place who refused to join in the
dance with their companions.
What can we do? Well, let us
look once more again to God’s
Eternalpurpose.TheGodofthe
Christian never gives up. Thous
ands of years ago He started a new
community. He chose the Jews,
not to be His favourites, but to be
His witnesses. They were to be
used for the redemption of human
ity.
The next step came with the
birth, life and resurrection of Jesus
Christ. The human Jesus lived the
kind of life that God meant all
persons to live. In losing the self He
achieved the most perfect life that

Alvin C. A. McLellan of Listow
ei, a former resident of Brussels
and the Milverton area, died
March 18, 1987 at his residence.
He was 86 years of age.
He was born in Mornington
Township on June 4, 1900, the son
of the late Peter McLellan and
Marion Chalmers.
He married Florence Mayberry
on Nov. 23, 1920 in Mornington
township. She survives him.
He resided in the Milverton area
and Brussels before he moved to
Listowei in 1971. He was a retired
farmer.
He was a member of Knox
Presbyterian Church and a past
president of the Mapleton Senior
Citizens. He is survived by one son,
Clement, and his wife Edna of
Brussels and one daughter, Mari
on, Mrs. Mervyn Krotizer of
Listowei. Also surviving are nine
grandchildren and 13 great-grand
children. He was predeceased by
six brothers, two sisters and one
granddaughter, Kathleen McLel
lan.
The funeral service took place
from the Robert Trench Funeral
Home, Listowei on Saturday,
March 21. Rev. Vern Tozer
conducted the service. Burial was
in Greenwood Cemetery, Milver
ton. Serving as pallbearers were
grandsons Don Kritzer, Ken Krit-

history records. Yet He died on a
Cross forsaken and alone.
Many thought that this was the
end. But God had not given up. A
few weeks later we find a marvel
lous community of believers, the
beginningofthe Christian Church.
Christ was alive in these people.
Moreover, they discovered that the
crucifixion was the beginning of
something new rather than the
ending of something old.
Upon looking back they could
see that the crucifixion was
actually the love of God dealing
with humanity’s waywardness.
This new community was made up
of men and women whose pride
had been smashed; “Not I but
Christ must live in me!’’ The
Church does not consist of mortar,
a professional staff, and those who
have become members. It is the
new people of God, those who have
crucified the self.

humanity. How honoured we are to
haveapartin this plan ofGod! Soin
the40-daysofLent, let us seriously
reflect upon our relationship with
God, and proclaim what God has
done in Jesus Christ.
