Theteamjustdidn ’tplayasif they wanted the victory and Wellesley held a power play advantage for most of the game which the home team took advant age of. Wellesley dominated the first period of play scoring three unanswered goals to take a 3-0 lead. They added three more goals in the second period to take a commanding lead. It was 11:57 of the third period before Ken Higgins beat the goalie on a pass from Dave Montgomery and Brian Deitner to spoil a shut-out for the home goalie. Wellesley scored with 2:43 re maining in the game to claim their 7-1 victory. WIN PROTEST Brussels won the protest on Thursday evening so Wellesley returned to Brussels on Friday night to replay game three. It proved to be an excellent game of hockey. Kevin Deitner scored on a pass from Dave Stephenson just 46 seconds into the game to give Brussels a 1-0 lead. That was short-lived as Welle sley came back in a little over two minutes to tie the score. The remainder of the period was scoreless. Dave Golley scored on a pass from Jim Campbell and Dave Murray at the 17:50 mark to give Brussels the lead once more. Good hockey ensued with the remainder of the second period scoreless. Sports Brussels minor teams win The Bantams and Midget teams continued their group playoffs this week. The Bantam team was in Harriston for their first game of the series and were defeated by the home team 6-2. The goal scorers for Brussels were Brad Taylor assisted by Jeff Earl, and Scott Bremner assisted by Steve Fritz. They will play the second game back in Brussels on Wednesday night at 6:45. CONSOLATION WINNERS After being defeated 1-0 by SullivanTwp. one week agoin their first game at the Harriston Bantam Tournament, the team returned to play their second game on the consolation side. The opposition was provided by a squad from Belmore u/hnm thpv defeated 6-0 In tneir next game they played a team from Thedford whom they defeated 3-1. This victory put them into the consolation final against Ayr on Sunday night. Brussels was victorious in this game as well, defeating Ayr 5-3 to claim the consolation championship. The bantam team will play their first game in the St. Clements tourna ment on Thursday night of this week. The Midgets will be playing their first game of the final series against Belmore on Tuesday night in Brussels at 6:45 for their group phamninnehin Wellesley came out in the third period to tie the score with 17:21 on theclock. They scored the go-a head goal at 11:32. Play continued until there was l:251eftinthe period and Gerry Wheeler came up with the tying goal. The remaining time was scoreless forcing overtime. A sudden-victory overtime of 20 minutes was set-up and after a rest, play commenced. Good hoc key was the name of the game for almost 10 minutes when Wellesley finally beat goalie Keith McClure to claim the hard-earned victory. The team returned to Wellesley on Saturday night to re-play game four. It was another even game of hockey. Wellesley held a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period even though Brussels had out-shot them 9-8. The Crusaders had the opportunities but just couldn’t beat a sharp goalie. Brussels finally broke the ice at the 13:41 mark of the second period when Brian Hastie scored from Dave Montgomery and Dave Mur ray to make the score 2-1. Wellesley bounced back in a matter of 27 seconds to go up by two again. The remainder of the period was scoreless. Wellesley scored at 18:24 of the third period to go ahead 4-1. Brussels added one more at 12:24 onapowerplay effortwhen Ken Higgins scored from Gerry Whee ler. Wellesley scored again at 9:24 for their fifth goal. Brussels got their third goal by Dave Montgomery unassisted with 5:04 remaining in the game but they couldn’t add anymore. Welle sley claimed the 5-3 victory and the series. As a spectator I would say Brussels on the whole was a better hockey club but just couldn’t beat a very sharp goalie that kept Welle sley in the series. Congratulations fellows on an excellent series and a very good season. You played well and we hope to see you all back again next season. BY LOIS Me ARTER After having won an exciting overtime game in Exeter on the previous Sunday evening, the Bulls were at home to Exeter Hawks on Wednesday night hold ing a 3-1 lead in the best of seven series. The two teams had played good even hockey and this game was to be no different. End-to-end action was the name of the game with only 6:48 left in the period when Tim Fritz scored on a pass from Kevin Lee to give Brussels a 1-0 lead. The Bulls managed to hold that lead and had the edge in play as they out-shot the visitors 13-4 in the first period. The second period proved to be a scoreless twenty minutes of hockey and was a good exciting game to watch until within two minutes of completion we had the first nasty incident of the series. The Exeter goalie received a five-minute penalty for intent to injure when he severely struck Marty Rutledge on the left leg with his goalie’s stick. Marty was helped from the ice to the dressing room for the remaind er of the period. After a check over by St. John’s Ambulance attendant Jim Garniss (whom we appreciate very much) Marty feturnedtotheicefor the third period with a badly bruised leg. He gained revenge on the visiting goalie, as he scored on him after only a minute and 21 seconds of play on a pass from Mike Chapman and Tim Fritz, to give Brussels a 2-0 lead. At the 11:24 mark Rob Cardiff scored on a pass from Kevin Mc'Arter to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead. There was 5:07 remaining when Marty scored his second goal assisted by Paul Robinson and Tim Fritz. The last five minutes was good defensive hockey bytheteamas they helped goalie Jeff McGavin claim his second shut-out of the series and a 4-0 victory for the game and 4 games to 1 for the series. The victory also gave Brussels the north division title.
