Hundreds of half-grown rainbow trout roil the surface of the water in one of the large outside tanks as Robert Charter dumps in feed for them. The settling pond, where the twice-cycled water goes to settle out gasses and solids before being discharged into a creek, can be seen in the background. Investment over $100,000 means farm not paying off yet Continued from page A4 Alps Creek Farm's reputation grows. With a capital investment of over $100,000, the fish farm has not nearly started to pay off yet, Robert says. But the income is rising at a steady rate, partly fired by the increasing demand for fresh fish from a public that seems to be reducingtheamountofred meat in its diet, for a variety of reasons. At this point, aquaculture takes only a few hours of each of Robert’s days; with a local man available to feed the fish if at any time he can’t get to the farm himself. But he loves the work, and loves talking to the people who come to buy fish, or just to see the remarkable facility. He says he has plans for expansion, but is in no hurry to do so - “it’s still a one-man hobby,’’ he claims. But the writing is definitely on the wall - one of these years, the Charters will be making the decision which will not be easy for either of them: do they stay on the 350-acre East Wawanosh farm which has been in Robert’s family for 135 years ... or do they move to the lovely world they are creating in Culross Township? Only time will tell. • vrwtr/* wfn « vuuutnitty *Some varieties are limited We also Provide services forcustem clean ing, bagging and treating *Give us a call for a quote on allyour seed requirements * Orders subject to product availability bagging and treating MAC ARMSTRONG SEED ONTARIOLIMITED’620526 RR2,Teeswater SOYA BEANS •Maple Arrow •OAC Libra GRASS SEED •Alfalfa •Timothy •Or any mixture - according to your requirements CERTIFIED MIXED GRAIN CERTIFIED BARLEY •Leger •Herta •Rodeo •Mingo •Micmac •Bruce •Birka CERTIFIED OATS •Donald •Ogle •Tibor (hulless oats) Hillcrest Restaurant 523-9352 in Londesboro has become a cozy stop in the country since Paul and Marg Brunkard? took over as hosts.
