Atoms invade Brussels The 13th Annual Optimist Atom Tournament opened last weekend in Brussels. This was the first weekend of a two-weekend event which will see 24 teams from south-western Ontario in competi tion for B & C division Optimist trophies. At the end of the second weekend one lucky atom player will win one free week at Huronia Hockey School at Pike Lake. This prize has been donated by the school for the past few years. The organization for these tour naments begins about four months before the event actually takes place. Optimist members and their ladies work very hard to make it a success but state that without the generous support of area mer chants and individuals they could not sponsor these weekends. The result from the first week end of action in the “B” division was: Listowel 4, Kincardine 3, Durham 9, Tavistock 1, Seaforth 1, Dresden 0, Cambridge 1, Goderich 3, Wingham 1, Walkerton 0. Hensall came back a few minutes later to tie, but just 10 seconds later Andrew assisted by Goob got the second goal for Brussels. The second period started to look bleak as Hensall scored the first three goals to give them a 4-2 lead, but Brussels, never giving up, got one more goal thanks to Jeff Finch and Trevor Wilson. Chad McCallum faced off for the third period, took control and skated rig ht to the Hensall net to tie up the score. Where previously Brussels had kept 75 per cent of the play in the Hensall zone, they were now starting to tire out chasing Hensall’s very fast No. 10 and Jamie Thomas in net, made some great saves. The last six minutes of the game were busy. Hensall scored twice. Goob got a break away and scored once for Brussels. Hensall’sNo. lOscored twice more and with just 44 seconds left, Andrew scored once more for Brussels, leaving the score at 8-6 for Hensail. Therefore, any donations to this fund will not be tax deductible. This decision comes after two applications and numerous telephone conversations and at this point appears final. If you have concerns about this matter, please contact Lion President Howard Cartwright to discuss your donation. We trust that this decision will not dampen the enthusiasm and support generated for Ron who, incidentally, is now driving his fully-equipped van.
