Sports Blyth Tykes lose in tournament play Blyth Novices lead playoffs BY RUSTY BLADES The first game of the Blyth- Milverton novice series was played last Wednesday evening on Blyth’s home pond with the locals escaping with a 5-2 triumph. The Scoring Machine staked Blyth toa 2-0 first period lead with a couple of unanswered tallies. Jason Rutledge sent Henry Bos in on goal with a nice pass before Henry cutin front of the net and slid the puck under the goaltender for the game opening marker. Before the period had ended, Blyth notched a power play goal as Brian McNichol and Jason Rutledge sent Henry Bos down the left wing side and he rifled a shot just under the crossbar. Less than a minute into the second frame, Milverton cut Blyth’s lead in half but Blyth replied before the period ended to restore theJr two goal lead. Ryan Chamney headmanned the puck to ChrisHowsonwhocuttothe net and took a shot on goal. The goalie made a pad save before Scott Arthur pounced on the rebound and pushed the puck across the goal line. Blyth upped the count to 4-1 in the third as defenceman Peter Craig intercepted an errant clear ing pass in the Milverton zone and lit the goal light up with a wicked wrist shot. One minute later Brussels Pre-novices please fans It was a beautiful, warm, sunny, spring day when the Brussels Pre-Novice Sprouts travelled to the Lucknow Flea Tournament this past Saturday. They must have had a touch of Spring Fever, as they provided their fans with two exciting, well-played games of hockey. Ripley, unknowingly, did the wrong thing when they scored the first goal just two minutes into the game, because from there on in, Brussels was on the warpath. Halfway through the first period, after many shots on net, Steven Goob) Machan scored the first Continued on page 17 Mil ver ton cut the lead to 4-2 but Blyth completed the scoring with a shorthanded goal with two minutes and one second left in the contest. Peter Craig made a rewarding rink length race down the right wing boards. Ryan Chamney caught up to him at the Milverton blue line where they split the defence and went in alone on the helpless goaltender. Peter drew the goal tender to one side of the crease before he cleverly passed across the net to Ryan who easily tipped the disc into the now vacated goal. This was by no means a classic confrontation as neither team seemed to be able to skate or pass with any authority but Blyth hung on for a 5-2 win.
