Crusaders fought their way through a penalty-ridden game to whip the Wellesley Merchants 9-4 in Brussels on Sunday night. The two teams meet again in Brussels next Sunday in the playoff series. Crusaders tie Wellesley series BYLOISMcARTER After eliminating Lucknow, the Brussels Crusaders Intermediate team commenced their playoff series against Wellesley on Friday night at Wellesley. Brussels opened the scoring just 48 seconds into the game when Brian TenPas scored from Brian Deitner. It took until 12:50 before Wellesley scored to tie the game and then scored to go ahead at 11:03. They added to that lead at 7:35._________ The Crusaders came back to score at 4:20 when Ken Higgins beat the goalie on a pass from Dave Montgomery. Kevin Deitner scor­ ed from Gerry Wheeler just 22 seconds later to tie the score but Wellesley came back at 1:49 to score again and take a 4-3 lead in the game. Scoring in the second period slowed down considerably. Brus­ sels scored at 15:41 when Jim Campbell and Dave Murray com­ bined to tie the score at 4. Play continued until 4:42 when Welle­ sley got a goal to go ahead once more and hold the lead at 5-4 when the period ended. Wellesley scor­ ed two more goals at 18:50 and 13:54 to take the 7-4 lead. Brussels finally came back with a goal at 11:37 when Brian Deitner scored from Ken Cousins and Rob Core. They added another at 2:19 on their come-back try when Dave Stephenson scored from Ken Cousins tocomewithin one, but they just couldn’t buy the tying goal. Wellesley claimed the 7-6 victory. It was great to look at the score sheet and see only 2 minutes in penalties for the Brussels club and a total of eight minutes for Wellesley in the three periods of hockey. ROUGH GAME Sorry to say the same thing did not hold true for the game played in Brusselson Sundaynight as the penalty box was rarely empty. Brussels came out looking strong as they scored the first goals. Peter Bennett scored at 17:38 from Brian Hastie to take the lead. DaveStephensonandKen Cousins combined for the second goalat 16:41. Thenat 15:28 Jim Campbell scored from Dave Mont­ gomery to make it 3-0 for the Crusaders. The tables turned and Wellesley started their comeback. They scored at 12:27 and 9:54 to come within one and then added the tying goal at 8:06. Brussels managed to hang with Rob Core scoring from Ken Higgins and Brian Deitner at 5:43 to go ahead. With just 1:26 left in the period Jim Campbell scored from Dave Murray and Brian TenPas to end the period with a 5-3 lead. Scoring in the second period slowed down with each team scoring only once. Wellesley scor­ ed at 13:36 but Brussels also scored at 10:34 when Ken Cousins beat the goalie on a pass from Dave Murray and Brian TenPas to retain a two goal lead. Brussels claimed the third per­ iod of play with Dave Murray scoring at 13:05 on a pass from Brian TenPas and Dave Montgom­ ery. Dave Stephenson scored at 3:54 from Ken Cousins and Kevin Deitner on a power play effort. With only 17 seconds left in the game Ken Cousins scored on a nice pass across the ice from Ken Higgins to give Brussels a second 9-4 win. The two teams will meet again on Friday night in Wellesley and back in Brussels on Sunday night at 8 p.m. as the series continues with one win each. The lucky winner of the 50-50 draw was Paul McDonald, Brus­ sels picking up $83. Sports Bulls eliminate Mitchell Hawks BYLOISMcARTER The Mitchell Hawks were in town on Wednesday night for the fifth game of their playoff series with Brussels leading three games to one. From the drop of the first puck, you knew it was going to be a tough garrfe. Mitchell was in a do or die situation and Brussels wanted the victory. Both goalies did their jobs well and there was 7:18 left in the first period when defenceman Bill Haines blasted a shot past the visiting goalie after receiving a drop pass from forwards Kevin Lee and Kevin McArter. The remain­ der of the period was scoreless givingtheBullsa l-01eadatthe end of the period. Thirty-eight seconds into the second period Tim Fritz scored from Marty Rutledge to add to that lead. In a matter of 20 seconds Marty Rutledge scored unassisted off the next faceoff. Play continued until 10:48 when Mitchell got their first goal of the game. They scored one more goal at 1:43 to come within one of the Bulls. There were 13 seconds remaining in the period when Marty Rutledge scored from Kevin Ruttan to make it 4-2 for Brussels. • Mitchell came out strong in the third period determined to get a victory. They scored their first goal at 17:27and then added the second goal at 15:27 to attain a tie hockey game. End to end play continued until 2:08 when Kevin McArter tucked in a goal on a pass from Rob Cardiff and Bill Haines to get the game winner on a power play effort. Marty Rutledge got the insur­ ance goal on a pass from Paul Robinson when he scored in the empty net with just 21 seconds remaining. The 6-4 victory gave Brussels the series 4 games to 1 andadvanced them to the semi­ final series against Exeter. Exeter Hawks were in town on Sunday afternoon for the first game in a best four out of seven series. It will be a very even series if the first game is any indication of future play. Both teams had equal opportunities to score with both goalies playing well. Brussels scored the first and only goal of the first period at 9:45 when Kevin McArter beat the goalie on a pass from Kevin Lee to take a 1-0 lead. The second period saw Kevin McArterpickupthe puck on the opening face-off and work his way down the ice to score unassisted in the first 50 seconds of play.
