Shoot-out confusing, stressful Western Ontario Athletic Association [WOAA] representative Hugh Nichol of Brussels was on hand to present Intermediate B trophies to the Brussels Crusaders before their game in Brussels on Sunday. Above, Mr. Nichol turns over the trophy for the lowest team goals-against-average in the division to Crusader goalies Mike Smith of Brussels [left] and Keith McClure of Walton. The team’s third net-minder, Rob Stute, was absent when the photo was taken. Continued from page ZU Brussels goal on a pass from Trevor Wilson. Later, Brett Fisher and Corey Newman assisted Andrew Exel for Brussels’ second goal and one minute after that Steve was assisted by Andrew and Corey for the third goal. There was a lot of scurrying and shuffling back and forth for awhile when finally Chad McCallum received the pass from Clint Fisher and made his shot count. Then, less than a minute later, Chad got his break-away to leave the score 5-1 for Brussels at the end of the first period. Two determined teams emerged for the second period with just an excellent display of hockey from both teams. There were numerous incidents of purposeful, pre-de termined (not accidental) passing from the Brussels players. There was very determined, forceful checking from defencemen Mat thew Shortreed, Brett Fisher, Scott Clarkson and Josh Beuermann. And Holy Moly, Jaimie Thomas, what a super goalie. These efforts were rewarded with two more goals. The first scored by Steve Machan, assisted by Jeff Finch and Andrew, the second and last goal of the game scored by Chad McCallum assisted by Josh Beuerman and Jeff Finch. Brussels’ 7-1 win put them in the Championship round. The second game, against Bel grave was a tense, heart-pound ing, go-either-way, type of game that really kept the adrenalin flowing. _ Belgrave’s Brent Robinson scor ed the first goal just three minutes into the game. Sometime later Steven Machan scored for Brussels on a pass from Andrew. Belgrave’s Robinson came back to again take the lead but Steve received the pass from Scott Clarkson to tie up the score again. Seemingly enjoy ing this, Steve received a pass from Andrew and scored again just two minutes later. With 49 seconds remaining, Steve circled around centre ice waiting for the pass that would give him the edge. Josh passed, Steve received and away he went to give Brussels a 4-2 lead at the end of the first period. The second period arrived with the same excellent passing, check ing and team work, but Belgrave took the offensive. The dreaded No. 3, Brent Robinson, scored two goals for Belgrave leaving the score in a 4-4 tie. A very long, confusing, stressful shoot-out then took place, with somewhere around 25-35 shots on net, with Belgrave eventually getting the one up to win. And now a word of advice to anyone ever involved in organizing a tournament. Never, never put that much stress and pressure on young children to solve a tie score. Shoot-outs do not adequately representthe team’s ability to play together and are much too stressful for the goalies and shooters. Shoot-outs are a very real form of child abuse, which should be challenged. Goodluck Brussels Unpredictable Pre-Novice this weekend at the Clinton tourna ment.
