Winners in the Public Speaking contest between Blyth Public School and Hullett Central were chosen when the two schools met Feb. 25. In the Elementary Division, Grades 7-8, Shane Taylor [front, left] placed 1st; Brent Howatt [centre] was 2nd; and Kelly Cook was 3rd. With them are members of the Blyth Legion, sponsors of the competition: [back, from left] Clare Vincent, Mary Lou Stewart and Donna Govier. Phone 523-4250 24 at Londesboro World Day of Prayer The U.C.W. meeting was held following the World Day of Prayer service on Friday night. President Joan Whyte welcomed all and thanked everyone who helped with the U.C.W. Anniversary service and with the Lions supper. The minutes of the last meeting were ready by Helen Lawson. The Rev. Snihur returns from Florida visit Mattie McGregor of Kippen visited over the weekend with Clara Riley. Dave, Caron and Gray Snihur returned home after a two-week holiday to Deland, Florida, visiting with Dave’s parents. Visiiing on the weekend with Trudy and John Pollard was her sister, Agnes Rhoads from Strat­ ford. Ruth Shaddick returned home Saturday night after spending two Crown of thorns shown at Londesboro church The Londesboro United Church held a service on the first Sunday of Lent. Greeting were Rev. Snihur and Gordon Shobbrook. The ush­ ers were Shannon Duizer, Melanie Knox, Christine Potter and Vicky Lou Riley. A hymn-sing was held prior to the service led by Rev. Snihur with pianist, Gail Lear. Rev. Snihur welcomed all and gavethecallto worship and the announcements. The flowers on the memorial stand were in loving memory of Gladys Armstrong who passed away four years ago and is Burns UCW Unit meets The Burns U.C.W. meeting was held Friday, March 6 at 2 p.m. at the home of Kay Konarski with 14 members and one visitor present. It was the World Day of Prayer and the printed program was followed with everyone taking part. Mrs. Rice conducted the busi­ ness. Roll call was answered. The minutes of the previous meeting and the treasurer’s report were given. Correspondence was thank correspondence was a thank you from Hattie Wood for a life membership pin. Invitations were received to Seaforth North St. United Church on March 23 at 8 p.m., to Walton U.C.W. Easter Thankoffering on April 5 at 2:30 p.m., to the Daffodil tea in Clinton on April3at2:30p.m. (bring pan of squares and one is to help serve), weeks in Los-Cabos in California. Sunday visitors with Ruth and Allen Shaddick were Jeffrey Shad­ dick of London and Lloy and Derk Garlichs of Waterloo. Sunday visitors with Beth Knox were Cliff and Ruth Shobbrook, Charlieand Shirley Shobbrook, Margaret and Wayne Allin, Cindy Swan, Melvin, Barbara, Theresa, Melanie and Christopher Knox. Jean Scott visited on Sunday afternoon with Rosie Armstrong of Clinton. remembered by her husband Jack, Doreen and Ken and their families. This Friday, a family crokinole party will be held at 8 p.m. At the children’s time the song “Jesus is a friend” was sung. He told them to “Share a Smile”. On display was a crown of thorns which was put on top of the cross. Junior teachers were Laura and Billy Jim Scott. The choir anthem was “Whispering Hope” with choir director, Marsha Szusz and organist, Deanna Lyon. The sermon was “Journey toward the cross” speaking on sacrifice. you cards from Jean Leiper, Nesbitt family, an invitiation to St. Mary’s quilt show on May 6-7 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with admission $2. Get-well cards were sent to Josephine McGregor and Vina Knox. A birthday card was sent to Margaret Whyte. Mrs. Rice repor­ ted two more boxes of clothes were sent to Toronto. The meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer. Lunch was served. to the Blyth U.C.W. meeting on April 12 at 8 p.m., to St. Mary’s quilt show on May 6-7 at 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., admission $2. Miss W. R. McFarlane, Ontario regional director of Leprosy Mis­ sion Canada will speak at the October meeting. The Westmini­ ster weekend will be held on June 5-6-7; on April 6-7 the London Conference of United Church Women annual meeting will be held. The treasurer’s reportwas given by Kitty McGregor showing a balance of $1,177.96. Ruth Vincent reported on the 60th Canadian Ladies Auxiliary, Blyth project to install a lift at the arena hall. It was moved to donate $600 to this. Audrey Thompson reported on a quilt. The April meeting will be held on April 13 with lunch at 1:30 p.m. It was moved to have a silent auction and each group is to donate $25 Anniversary Gift from this auction. Collection and birthday pennies were received. They will cater to the men’s bowlers on April 28. There were 24 who attended and Group 6 convened the meeting. The theme “Come and Rejoice’ ’ on the printed program was followed. Betty Hulley welcomed all. The prologue was read by Pearl Mason, Leader I was Helen Alexander. Gail Lear was the pianist for the hymns. The “Re­ membering Speakers” were Mar­ garet Good and Betty Hulley. Helen Lee placed the lighted lamp 16 play shuffleboard On March 4 there were 16 players at shuffleboard. Winners were Elizabeth Lawson and Les Reid. See you March 11 at 8 p.m. 12 tables at euchre At the W.I. card party on March 6 there were 12 tables in play. Results: ladies’ high, Margaret Smale; lone hands, Vietta Hog­ gart; low, Marie Krauter; men’s high, Les Reid; lone hands, Glen Carter; low’, Wilfred Shortreed. The next card party will be in two weeks on March 20. International globe was placed on the table by Mary Peel. Thanksgiving prayer of thanks for World Day of Prayer was given by Rev. Dave Snihur. Scripture from Luke 14-15-24 was read by Pearl Mason. The meditation to confession was given by Voice 1 Brenda Radford and Voice 2 Dave Snihur and from the congregation by June Fothergill. “Hear our Cry” from continents’ voice of Africa was given by Audrey Thompson, Asca by Helen Lee, Caribbean by Kitty McGregor, Europe by Hattie Wood, Latin America by Dorothy Tamblyn, Middle East by Ruth Vince.pt, North America by Joan Whyte, Pacific by Dora Shobbrook and Aboriginal people by Helen Law­ son. The music was recorded by Gail Lear. The offering was received by Betty Hulley and Pearl Mason. The meeting closed with the hymn, “O God our help in ages past.” Grace was sung and lunch was served by Mary Longman, Florence Cartwright and Hazel Watkins. A birthday card was signed by all for Margaret Whyte.
