Crusaders bounce back to eliminate Lucknow BY LOIS Me ARTER Good hockey action continues to be played by the Intermediate team as they play Lucknow in their best of seven series. The team was at home to Lucknow on Wednesday night with a good home-town crowd. Brussels dominated the game with goalie Keith McClure standing strong in the nets. Ken Cousins opened the scoring at 15:09 on a pass from Dave Stephenson and Pete Bennett. Dave Stephenson and Kevin Deit- ner combined with 1:13 left in the period to take a 2-0 lead. Gerry Wheeler and Ken Higgins connected passes to score the only goal of the second period of play. Gerry Wheeler scored at 13:31 from Dave Golley for the first goal of the third period. Gerry complet­ ed his hat-trick at 10:49 on a pass from Pete Bennett and Dave Golly. Kevin Deitner and Ken Cousins combined with 1:56 left in the game, to complete the scoring and defeat Lucknow by a 6-0 score. LUCKNOW WINS The team returned to Lucknow on Friday night for the fourth game. DaveMurrayandDave Mont­ gomery combined to score the only goal of the period and give Brussels a 1-0 lead. In a do-or-die situation, Luck- nowcameoutstrong and scored three unanswered goals in the second period to take a 3-1 lead. They continued their attack scor­ ing the first goal of the third period. Ken Cousins and Kevin Deitner combined to score Brussels’ first goal of the period with Lucknow adding goal five next. Dave Stephensonthenscored from Ken Cousins and Kevin Deitner for goal number three with Lucknow keeping up the pace and adding another goal. Brussels then started their comeback trail with Ken Higgins scoring from Dave Stephenson for the fourth goal. Ken Cousins then scored. Kevin Deitner and Brian Tenpas with Dave Stephenson scoring the third consecutive goal from Ken Cousins and Kevin Deitner to tie the score at six. With only one minute left to play Lucknow scored the go-ahead goal, and in attempt to tie the score Brussels pulled the goalie only to have Lucknow score in the empty net and win the game 8-6 to claim their first victory of the series. Sorry to report that Randy Clarke had his ankle broken in this game. WRAP UP SERIES The series then returned to Brussels for the fifth game on Sunday afternoon. The Crusaders opened the scoring just four minutes into the period when defencemen Rob Core and Brian Tenpas combined to beat the goalie. Lucknow came back at 9:33 to tie the score and then take the lead at 4:13 to end the first period at 2-1 in their favour. Brussels claimed the second period ofplay with Brian Hastie scoring from Gerry Wheeler at 16:44 for their second goal. Alvinston scored the only goal of the first period and then scored the first goal in the second period. Brussels finally got on the score­ Brussels out-shot Lucknow 12-9 in the third period and scored the only goal of the period on a power play when Brian Tenpas assisted by Brian Deitner and Gerry Wheeler beat the goalie for the sixth goal. The 6-3 victory for Brussels eliminated Lucknow from Michael Cronin, goaltender for the Blyth Bantams reaches to cover a loose puck while his teammates converge to keep Shallow Lake players out of the goalcrease in the WOAA Bantam E Championship game in Blyth Wednesday night. Unfortunately one too many pucks got into the Blyth net as Shallow Lake won the game and the series by one goal after Blyth had won an earlier game in the last 22 seconds. Brussels Peewees lose in overtime board with 2:01 remaining when Brett Lee scored from Shawn Jacklin. Alvinston scored two quick goals less than a minute apart early in the third with Brussels scoring at 7:41 with Shawn Jacklin and Dan Beuermann getting credit for the goal. Itwas great to see the majority of consolation round against Moore- town at 4:30. Play had continued until 4:09 was left and Greg Mulvey scored for Brussels, but Moore- town was quick to come back scoring in the next minute of play to end the first period at 1-1. Mooretown went on to score at 2:36and with one second left in the second period to take a 3-1 lead.
