Goa! in last 27 seconds gives Bulls lead
Throwing everything he has into the game, Mitchell Hawks goalie Jeff Redfern temporarily loses his stick
after a wild shot at the goal in Brussels last Friday. The Brussels Bulls won the game 6-5; both teams return
to Brussels tonight [Wednesday] for the fifth game of the Junior “D” series.

Were you there? Well, if you
weren’t, you’re missing some
excellent hockey this past week.
Our local hockey teams have been
playing some super games and
deserveyour support. It’sgreat
playoff action.
The Junior hockey team played
three games this past week with
some excellent entertaining
hockey.
After winning the first game at
home in a best four out of seven
series, the Bulls travelled to
Mitchell on Tuesday night for the
secondgame. Brussels claimed the
first period of play with Bill Haines
scoring from Marty Rutledge after
five minutes of play and then at the
10:28 mark Kevin McArter tucked
a short-handed goal in the corner to
hold a 2-0 lead at the end of the first
period.
The Hawks scored first in the
second period after just a minute
and 19 seconds play to start the
come back trail. Kevin Johnston
scored at 17:41 from Brian Camp
bell and Mike Chapman to add to
the Bull’s lead. Mitchell added
another at 14:50 in the see-saw
battle.
Brussels capitalized on a penalty
at 9:13 when Todd Hutton scored
from Blake Flett and Kevin Lee to
make it 4-2.
Mitchell completed the scoring
in the second period getting a goal
at 3:14 to come within one.
The third period had the Hawks
scoring at 17:22 to tie the game but
just three minutes later Kevin
McArter scored from Kevin Lee on
a power play to give Brussels the
lead.
The end-to-end struggle contin
ued with Mitchell tying the score
again at 11:40. Kevin Lee and
Kevin McArter combined to score
just one minute later to put
Brussels back in the lead once
more. Mitchell kept the pressure
on and tied the game again with
6:10 remaining. They scored what
proved to be the winning goal with
2:54 left in the period as Brussels
failed to beat the goalie again
before the game ended.
Brussels out-shot Mitchell 32-24
in the game.
WIN IN LAST 27 SECONDS
The stage was set for the third
game back in Brussels on Friday
night with the series tied at a game
a piece. The teams played half the
first period before Mitchell found
an opening to score at the 9:45
mark. They added their second
goal with 3:42 left on the clock.
Murray Houghton finally broke
the ice for the Bulls just 22 seconds
later on a pass from Paul Robinson
to get Brussels on the board. With
just three seconds remaining in the
period Doug Taylor scored, unas
sisted, to tie the game. Shots on
goal showed the equality in play as
the shots on net were 17-16 in
favour of Mitchell.
Brussels dominated the second
period of play with Marty Rutledge
getting the first goal unassisted at
15:49 to put the Bulls ahead by one.
Play continued until 5:28 when
Paul Edwards scored from Brian
Campbell to put Brussels ahead by
two.
There was 1:17 on the clock when
Kevin McArter scored from line
mates Kevin Lee and Todd Hutton
to make the score 5-2. Brussels
allowed Mitchell to score with just
10 seconds on the clock to give the
visitors a boost before the period
ended.
Both teams had numerous op
portunities before Mitchell finally
scored at 12:16. Play continued
until2:44when the Hawks were
allowed to score again to tie the
game.
There was just 27 seconds left on
the clock when Kevin McArter
came around from behind the net
and tucked the puck in the corner to
claim the 6-5 victory for Brussels.
The fourth game was set for
Mitchell Sunday night. The teams
stepped on the ice to a full house
and they weren’t disappointed as
they witnessed an excellent game
of hockey.
Brussels out-shot the Hawks
18-3 but Mitchell scored the only
goal of the period with 6:30 on the
clock to take a 1 -0 lead at the end of
the first period.
The Bulls must have talked to
themselvevs for the second period
as only 1:03 had been played when
Tim Fritz scored from Kevin
Ruttan and Paul Robinson to tie the
score. Play continued until 12:01
when Brian Campbell scored from
Kevin Lee and Marty Rutledge to
take the lead.
Just 23 seconds later Kevin
McArter scored from Kevin Ruttan
to add to that lead. Mitchell scored
at 8:09 to close the gap by one and
end the second period at 3-2.
The third period continued to be
the same end-to-end, heart-stopp
ing action but the shooters on
either team were kept at bay by the
goalies. The scoreless period gave
Brussels the 3-2 victory after
out-shooting the home team 37-22
in the game.
The fan support for Brussels was
tremendous in Mitchell and I'm
sure the team would like to see you
all back in Brussels on Wednesday
