The Brussels Bulls won the game 6-5; both teams return to Brussels tonight [Wednesday] for the fifth game of the Junior “D” series. BYLOISMcARTER Were you there? Well, if you weren’t, you’re missing some excellent hockey this past week. Our local hockey teams have been playing some super games and deserveyour support. It’sgreat playoff action. The Junior hockey team played three games this past week with some excellent entertaining hockey. After winning the first game at home in a best four out of seven series, the Bulls travelled to Mitchell on Tuesday night for the secondgame. Brussels claimed the first period of play with Bill Haines scoring from Marty Rutledge after five minutes of play and then at the 10:28 mark Kevin McArter tucked a short-handed goal in the corner to hold a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period. The Hawks scored first in the second period after just a minute and 19 seconds play to start the come back trail. Kevin Johnston scored at 17:41 from Brian Camp­ bell and Mike Chapman to add to the Bull’s lead. Mitchell added another at 14:50 in the see-saw battle. Brussels capitalized on a penalty at 9:13 when Todd Hutton scored from Blake Flett and Kevin Lee to make it 4-2. Mitchell completed the scoring in the second period getting a goal at 3:14 to come within one. The third period had the Hawks scoring at 17:22 to tie the game but just three minutes later Kevin McArter scored from Kevin Lee on a power play to give Brussels the lead. The end-to-end struggle contin­ ued with Mitchell tying the score again at 11:40. Kevin Lee and Kevin McArter combined to score just one minute later to put Brussels back in the lead once more. Mitchell kept the pressure on and tied the game again with 6:10 remaining. They scored what proved to be the winning goal with 2:54 left in the period as Brussels failed to beat the goalie again before the game ended. Brussels out-shot Mitchell 32-24 in the game. WIN IN LAST 27 SECONDS The stage was set for the third game back in Brussels on Friday night with the series tied at a game a piece. The teams played half the first period before Mitchell found an opening to score at the 9:45 mark. They added their second goal with 3:42 left on the clock. Murray Houghton finally broke the ice for the Bulls just 22 seconds later on a pass from Paul Robinson to get Brussels on the board. With just three seconds remaining in the period Doug Taylor scored, unas­ sisted, to tie the game. Shots on goal showed the equality in play as the shots on net were 17-16 in favour of Mitchell. Brussels dominated the second period of play with Marty Rutledge getting the first goal unassisted at 15:49 to put the Bulls ahead by one. Play continued until 5:28 when Paul Edwards scored from Brian Campbell to put Brussels ahead by two. There was 1:17 on the clock when Kevin McArter scored from line­ mates Kevin Lee and Todd Hutton to make the score 5-2. Brussels allowed Mitchell to score with just 10 seconds on the clock to give the visitors a boost before the period ended. Both teams had numerous op­ portunities before Mitchell finally scored at 12:16. Play continued until2:44when the Hawks were allowed to score again to tie the game. There was just 27 seconds left on the clock when Kevin McArter came around from behind the net and tucked the puck in the corner to claim the 6-5 victory for Brussels. The fourth game was set for Mitchell Sunday night. The teams stepped on the ice to a full house and they weren’t disappointed as they witnessed an excellent game of hockey. Brussels out-shot the Hawks 18-3 but Mitchell scored the only goal of the period with 6:30 on the clock to take a 1 -0 lead at the end of the first period. The Bulls must have talked to themselvevs for the second period as only 1:03 had been played when Tim Fritz scored from Kevin Ruttan and Paul Robinson to tie the score. Play continued until 12:01 when Brian Campbell scored from Kevin Lee and Marty Rutledge to take the lead. Just 23 seconds later Kevin McArter scored from Kevin Ruttan to add to that lead. Mitchell scored at 8:09 to close the gap by one and end the second period at 3-2. The third period continued to be the same end-to-end, heart-stopp­ ing action but the shooters on either team were kept at bay by the goalies. The scoreless period gave Brussels the 3-2 victory after out-shooting the home team 37-22 in the game. The fan support for Brussels was tremendous in Mitchell and I'm sure the team would like to see you all back in Brussels on Wednesday Sports Novices lose series in overtime The Novice team completed their playoffs this past week in two exciting games of hockey. The first game they played last week at home against Milverton they lost in overtime to the visitors 5-3. The boys scoring those goals were Randy Beuermann, Trevor Machan, and Grant Jarvis. Assists were not available. The team travelled to Milverton onTuesday nightfor the second game. Milverton took a sound 3-0 lead in the first period. Brussels didn’t give up with Randy Beuer­ mann scoring from Trevor Machan for the first goal of the period. Milverton added one more before David Lewington and Darrel Van­ ass scored Brussels’ second goal. The third period found the determination of the Brussels’ boys still coming through with Trevor Machan scoring from Ran­ dy Beuermann for the third goal. Kevin Kellington was the lucky winner of $131 in the 50-50 draw in Mitchell on Sunday night. The remainder of this series will be played with game 5 in Brussels, Wednesday at 8:30; game 6 in Mitchell on Friday night at8:30 (if necessary) and game 7 in Brussels Sunday at 2 p.m. (if necessary). Trevor Machan assisted by Jamie Smith scored to tie the game at 4. Exciting play continued until there was 1:36 remaining and Milverton scored toholdonand claim a5-4 victory. This eliminated Brussels from the playoffs but all were quite pleased with the hockey that they witnessed.
