The elder statesman of Grey Township volunteer firefighters, Ross Stephenson, has been pre sented with another medal to add to the growing collection of awards thatpaystributetohis31 years as a fireman. Huron-Bruce MP Murray Car diff was on hand Monday at the township council meeting to pre sent Mr. Stephenson with the Exemplary Service Medal on behalf of the government of Canada, in recognition of his long-standing service to his com munity. The certificate accompanying the medal reads “Your importance to the community cannot be overstated. Your community spir it, unselfish public service and personal sacrifice are greatly appreciated.’’ The national medal was institut ed two years agoby Prime Minister Brian Mulroney to honour fire fighters across Canada. At the time, the prime minister said that “Those who devote their careers to public safety, often at great risk to themselves, must be recognized by the community and nation they serve.” Mr. Stephenson has been a member of the Grey Township fire brigade since it was formed in 1956, the only original member of the force still in service. He began his fire-fighting career after being Clerk gives councillors Blyth-boasting lesson Bly th village councillors got a lesson in civic pride from Clerk- treasurer Helen Grubb at their February 10 meeting. Mrs. Grubb talked about all the things the village has to offer as she brought to the attention of council a trade show called the “Town and Country Home Show” to be held in Toronto in May. The show is a chance for communities to show and sell their living and leisure life-styles to people looking to relocate. As she gets to know Blyth better, Mrs. Grubb said, she is amazed at all the community has to offer, much more than most places its size. Councillors, she said, had lived here all along and perhaps they were “taking things for granted”. After taking a look at their community through fresh eyes, u councillors agreed that maybe the * Brussels Rebekahs meet The regular meeting of Morning Star Rebekah Lodge was held at the arena. The opening, business, and closing of Lodge were conducted by the Noble Grand Mary Nichol. Vice Grand Leona Connelly report ed sending several “get well” and birthday car ds as well as gifts to members who were ill. Joyce Pearson sent a thank you to Lodge members for shower gifts. Marie Turnbull sent a letter from Florida. Generous donations were received for the lodge’s renovation building fund from members. A request for money from Epilepsy Foundation will be taken care of by Humanitarian Services. The District Deputy President wrote re: District meet ing to be held in Exeter, April 8 at 2 o’clock. A very favourable report re: building renovations was giv en. Final plans for dessert euchre February 16 were made. Joan Bernard conducted a game of Trivia. Mary Davidson won the travelling prize. called in as a volunteer to help the Listowel fire department fight a major fire in Ethel, and was one of the first to volunteer when the township formed its own depart ment. He served as the township’s deputy chief for seven years, and as chief for a year after former chief Gordon Engel died two years ago, but decided he did not have the time, as a full-time farmer, to keep the post longer. As well as the new federal medal, Mr. Stephenson has a plaque from Grey Township re cognizing his 25th year of service as a fire-fighter, a second plaque and a gold watch from the township honouring his seven years as deputy chief, and medal from the province for his long-standing devotion to duty. “I’ve got armfuls of good things because of being on the brigade for so long, ’ ’ he says. He adds that he has found the job exciting all the way, and has enjoyed every minute of it, although he feels a great measure of pain and sorrow when a neighbour loses property to fire. And he has nothing but praise for the men who work with him as volunteer firemen today, and the men who have served in the past. “They are an organized, well-- trained bunch,” he says. “I don’t think there is a group anywhere that will respond quicker to a call for help than the Grey Township brigade.” show might be valuable. They will circulate information about it to the Blyth Festival and to the mer chant’s group and someone repre senting the council may visit the show to see if it might be worthwhile to use it for promotion in future. Council gave a donation of $375 to the Wingham and District Association for Mentally Retarded and $245 to the Lady Diana Nursery School in Vanastra. Forty dollars was donated to the Belgrave, Blyth and Brussels School Fair. A donation of $25 was made to the Blyth Snowtravellers poker rally. In the most unusual donation, council voted to honour the request of Mme. Louiseele Dupont of Quebec, a handicapped woman, who requested five village pins for herself and four other handicapped persons who collect such pins. Blyth won’t be taking advantage of a Ministry of Tourism and Recreation program to purchase magnetic break-away nets for the arena. The arena board decided that $3,000 for the nets was just too much money. Hockey tournament Continued from page 21 defensive work from Matthew Shortreed and offensive play from Jason Kellington, Trevor Wilson, Clint Fisher, Corey Campbell and Jeff Finch. Perhaps a little tired from taking turns in goal as well as out on the ice, they just couldn’t defend as well as they should have. Win or lose, however, they all came away happy after a lunch of hot dogs and cupcakes and looking forward to a third game on Sunday, which as it turns out was cancelled because of the storm. Great games boys and keep up the good work. Your fans are looking forward to more sore throats and hoarse voices at the Lucknow Tournament on March 7. Ross Stephenson of RR 1, Ethel, centre, was honoured on Monday with the presentation of the national Exemplary Service Award by Huron-Bruce MP Murray Cardiff, in recognition of his 31 years as a volunteer on the Grey Township Fire Brigade. Leona Armstrong, reeve of the township, was also on hand for the ceremony. Snell’s Grocery Limited BLYTH 523-9332 OPEN TUES. TO SAT. 9 A.M. - 6 P.M.
