Even with the Brussels Bulls’ goalies plagued by illness and injuries on Sunday, this is one shot that did not make it into the net for the Exeter Hawks. Brussels lost to the Hawks 6-1. Crusaders overpower Milverton 17-3 Sports Brussels Bulls split weekend games BY LOIS McARTER After a previously heavy week of hockey, the Junior hockey team was idle this past week until Saturday evening when they trav elled to Clinton to play the Mustangs. The Smurf line came through with the first goal 1:12 into the game. Sean Kieffer scored the goal assisted by Paul Coultes and Ron Chambers. Play continued until there were 3:26 remaining and Marty Ru Hedge added to the lead on a pass from Tim Fritz and Brian Campbell. The first goal of the second period came at the 17:32 mark when Kevin McArter scored on a power play effort from Tim Fritz and Paul Robinson. Clinton scored their first goal a minute later. Doug Shaw deflected a shot from Tim Fritz for Brussels’ fourth goal at 14:57. Clinton scored their second goal just 14 seconds later and then added the third goal at 6:39 to come within one. Brussels capitalized on a power play attempt at 2:36 when Tim Fritz scored from Rob Cardiff and Kevin McArter to get an insurance goal and end the second period at 5-3. The Bulls scored the only goal of the period at 15:02 and their third power play when Marty Rutledge beat the goalie on a pass from defencemen Murray Houghton and Doug Taylor to claim the 6 - 3 victory. The Clinton goalie played well in nets with Brussels out-shooting the home team 54 - 21. LOSE TO EXETER The Bulls were at home to the Exeter Hawks on Sunday after noon for their final league game of the season. A starting goalie for the Brussels nets was questionable as the flu bug bit one and injuries plagued the other two. Exeter scored early in the first period to take a 1 - 0 lead and hold it for the remainder of the period. The Hawks scored their second goal at 9:03 of the second period and held that lead until completion of the second period. The cold weather seemed to be effecting the Brussels players as they looked to be in slow motion. They allowed Exeter to score four straight goals in the third period. Kevin Johnston finally foiled the shut-out performance with 5:12 remaining when he directed a shot past the goalie from Tim Fritz and Doug Taylor. The game ended 6-1 in favour of the visitors. The playoff spots continue to be a question as victories and losses by all teams continue to be a toss up. Games will be played on Monday and Tuesday nights which will complete the regular schedule to determine the top four playoff spots with teams one and three, and two and four playing off in the first round of playoffs. The regular 50-50 draw was won this week by Brian Rutledge. The home game lottery draw of $50 was won by Joyce Tipple of Burlington.
