Girls' Ringette is becoming a more popular sport all the time, with a
somewhat gentler reputation than girls’ hockey. Above, one of the
Brussels teams does battle with the girls from Howick at the BMG
Community Centre last Saturday.

Brussels Atoms record perfect
Brussels Pre-Novice hosted an
exhibition game against Wingham
this past Saturday evening.
They must have been determin
ed to make up for the previous
Saturday’s game because just a
few minutes into the period Steven
Machan made a pass to Andrew
Exel to score Brussels’ first goal. A
few minutes later, Andrew and
Steven joined again for the second
goal.
Brussels was strong against a
beginning Wingham team, keep
ing the play almost entirely in the
Wingham zone. Brothers Greg and
Ryan Newman worked furiously
chasing the puck and trying to get it
into the Wingham net. Then about
half-way through the period, Steve
Machan scored on a pass from
Andrew Exel and later Steven
scored another goal unassisted.
The first period ended with a
terrific unassisted goal by Brett
Fisher, leaving the score 5-0 for
Brussels.
Second period Brussels players
switched positions. At first, un
familiar with their new jobs, they
let Wingham get past them to take
the play down to the Brussels net.
Whoever was taking their turn in
goal at the time, made some great
saves until Brussels finally found
their way back to the Wingham
end. Once they got back there, they
didn’t let up. Everyone tried their
best to get the next goal. Suddenly,
Steve Machanscoredagain on a
pass from Jeff Finch for a hat-trick.
Shortly thereafter, Chad McCall
um came through on a breakaway
making the score 7-0. Spurred on
by the thrill of it all, Chad
McCallum, assisted by Scott Clark
son and Josh Beuerman scored the
eighth goal and the ninth goal
unassisted. One poor woman kept
losing her hat as the wild fans
desperately wanted to reward all
the hat-tricks. .
Then one Wingham player
outfoxed the excited Brussels
team, and scored on a breakaway.
Back to the Wingham zone they
went. Brett Fisher made a beauti
ful pass to Jaimie Thomas who
tipped it into the net. Jaimie
excited by this, came back on a
breakaway to score again. Brussels
got a tripping penalty, but that
didn’t stop them. Andrew Exel got
another breakaway and made it
count for Brussels 12th goal, and
Chad McCallumfinished up the
scoring on a pass from Andrew to
end the game, at Brussels 13,
Wingham 1. Way to go Brussels

On February 6 the Brussels
Atoms met Wallace in a lack lustre
match which resulted in a 4-2 win.
This Saturday, regular season play
was completed by defeating Bel
grave 7-1 in Belgrave.
This makes a clean sweep for the
team with a 12-0-0 record. Offen
sively they rolled up 58 goals (4.8
per game) while allowing only 13
against (1.1 per game). Despite the
tight-checking game this team
employs, they averaged less than
two penalties per game.

uneventful, the weather was just
beginning to deteriorate. Within
minutes of the team’s arrival the
blizzard hit. As it was too late to
turn back, the team figured they
might as well forget the weather
and play hockey.
The home town team was the
first challenge. As they quickly
scored the first goal, one of the
locals let slip that this team was
undefeatedthisyear. When the
boys heard that, they turned it up a
notch. With a dazzling display of
intensity and teamwork they gave
the Williamsford crew a new
experience by downing them 7-4.
In the semi-final, a determined
Hanover squad stood their ground
and held Brussels to one goal for
the first two periods despite
incessant shelling by Brussels
defenceman from the point. Then
Brussels hit for two more for a final
score of 4 - 1.
