The company plans to apply to the Canadian Transport Commis sion for the abandonment of an uneconomic section of railway line which runs between the northwest outskirts of Guelph and Goderich. Company representatives met recently with B. G. Hanly, county administrator, to explain that the line handles an average of fewer than ten carloads of traffic a month in each of the last two years at all of the intermediate points combined. The track is part ofthe CP Rail Goderich subdivision which runs from Hamilton through Guelph to Goderich. The company spokesman also indicated to Hanly that in recent years potential railway traffic at Goderich itself, which is also served by Canadian National Railways, has faced intense com petition from Great Lakes’ vessels and this has had an adverse impact on CP Rails earnings. CP Rail is meeting with munici palities affected and shippers in the area before making a formal application for abandonment of the line. County Council approved the recommendation of its planning and development committee that the director of planning and development take a close look at the request. Council referred back to its executive committee a request from Ontario Midwestern Rail Services for support in its opposi tion to abandonment of area rail lines by CN and CP. The group also asked council to support Project ReRail in its proposal to assume ownership and/or operations of CN’s and Board of Education butts out Members of the Huron County Board of Education have passed a motion that smoking be permitted in only one location within the Board office in Clinton. Following the lead of education centre employees, the board unan imously agreed that smoking would henceforth take place only in the staff room at the centre, which would be equipped with an ecolo- gizer in an attempt to provide clean air for everyone using the building. CP’s rail lines. Council was also asked to support the concepts of Projects ReRail and Ontario Midwestern Rail Servicestodevelopan inte grated economic development pro- gram beneficial to industries, communities and the railway. The executive committee had recommended no action on the request because it found the letter confusing. However, Tuckersmith Reeve R. M. Bell, who had moved at the executive committee meeting that the request be filed, said he had no hesitation in recommending it be referred back to committee so it could take another look at it. The policy decision was made following a recommendation by the board’s executive committee, and went into effect immediately fol lowing the board meeting in February 2. Last year, trustees passed a motion prohibiting smoking in the board room, but provided them selves with a 10-minute “comfort break” each hour, in order that smoking could be done elsewhere in the building. 887-6408 LIFE STOP PREGNANT? and need help PAUL COOK 357-1537 519-357-1066 WINGHAM 1-800-328-5683TOLL FREE R.
