Mitchell Ha wks didn’t have that many good chances against the Brussels Bulls but they made the most of them as they defeated the Bulls for the second time in a week. Although outshot 39-22 Mitchell McGavin shuts out Exeter Hawks Crusaders overpower Wild Cats BY LOIS Me ARTER The Intermediate team was at home for a a rare mid-week game which showed in sparse spectators attendance. The first period was a good solid 20 minutes of scoreless hockey as both goalies came up with good saves. Monkton claimed the first goal of the game just 34 seconds into the second period to take a 1-0 lead. It was almost the midway point before Kevin Deitner scored from Ken Cousins to tie the score. There was only 1:34 remaining when Ken Higgins scored a go-ahead goal from Kevin Deitner. Then just 15 seconds later Dave Stephenson scored from Ken Cousins and Kevin Deitner. An additional 28 seconds passed when Dave Steph enson scored his second goal from Cousins to take a 4-1 lead. The Crusaders scored three quick goals in a span of 43 seconds. The Crusaders never looked back as they scored four more goals. Kevin Deitner picked up two of those goals with Dave Stephen son and Brian Deitner getting singles. Assists went to Ken Cousins with three, Dave Stephen son, two, and Paul Johnston, Randy Clarke and Kevin Deitner with one each. The Intermediates have a make up game to play with Milverton in Milverton this week before their play-offs begin. BY LOIS McARTER The Juniors had a heavy week of hockey scheduled this past week. They travelled to Mitchell on Tuesday night for their first game of the week which was a wide-open, high-scoring game. They were less than two minutes into the game when Kevin Ruttan scored from Tim Fritz to give Brussels a 1-0 lead. Play continued until 1:58 was left in the period and Mitchell scored to tie the game. Mitchell came out strong and scoredfour straightgoals in the first three minutes of play. It was 14:52 when Brussels got on the scoreboard again with Tim Fritz scoring from Kevin Lee and Todd Hutton. Tim scored his second goal at 13:15 from Rob Cardiff to make the score 5 - 3 in Mitchell’s favour. Mitchell was allowed to score two more goals before the period ended to take a 7 - 3 lead. It was the 12:45 mark of the third period when Kevin Lee assisted by Paul Edwards scored for Brussels. Mitchell scored their eighth goal at 8:36. Kevin Me Arter scored at 5:08 from Blake Flett and Tim Fritz on a power play effort. Less than a minute later Blake Flett and Kevin McArter combined for the second goal on their come-back trail. There was just 38 seconds remain ing when Marty Rutledge scored from Kevin Lee. They just couldn’t buy thetyinggoal with Mitchell claiming the 8-7 victory. Goal tending duties were shared by Pat Chambers who started the game and was replaced by Jeff McGavin after Chambers took a hard shot on the face mask. BEATEXETER The Bulls were at home to the second place Exeter Hawks team for a good game of hockey on Friday night. A good, fast end-to-end first period of hockey took place with the visitors out-shooting the home team by 11-6 but an ever-sharp performance by goalie Jeff Mc Gavin kept them at bay. The same good action continued in the second period until the 7:15 mark when right-winger Ron Chambers of the “Smurf Line’’ deflected a shot from defenceman Paul Robinson to give Brussels a 1-0 lead, and the only goal of the Sports Pee Wees eliminated After winning the first game of their playoff round 4-2 against Elma-Logan, the Peewees lost the second game 3-2 in a very close encounter here on Tuesday night. The boys played a good game, but just couldn’t beat the visiting goalie. Shawn Jacklin scored the first Brussels goal with assists coming from Dan Beuermann and Brian McArter. Brett Lee scored the second goal with Greg Mulvey and Brian McArter getting the assists. Exciting hockey action continu ed until 14:32 of the period when defenceman Bill Haines scored third and deciding game which was played on Friday night. They just weren’t the same sharp team we had seen in the two previous games and were defeated 6 - 2 by the visitors. Brad Taylor and Darren John ston scored the Brussels’ goals but those officiating neglected to honour anyone with assists which is too bad in the minor hockey system. This eliminated Brussels from O.M.H.A. contention. The boys will be playing an exhibition game in Blyth on Monday night. Jeff’s excellent play helped shut out the Exeter Hawks and led the Bulls to a much needed victory last Friday night. A complete line of Cooper Hockey Equipment from the point after Brian Camp bell had dropped the puck back to him from a scramble in front of the net. The remainder of the period was scoreless giving Brussels the 2-0 victory. Shots on net were 32 - 31 in favour of Brussels showing the good action filled game that it was. Goalie Jeff McGavin picked up his first shut-out of the year and first start of the night.
